Football, Politics and Human Rights: the organisation of football Argentina 1978 and Qatar 2022

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá průnik fotbalu, politiky a lidských práv prostřednictvím srovnávací analýzy mistrovství světa ve fotbale v Argentině v roce 1978 a posledního mistrovství světa ve fotbale v Kataru v roce 2022. První část je obecněji věnovaná oběma mistrovstvím zvlášť. Zabývá se událostmi vztahujícím se k období během zvolení zemí k hostitelství mistrovství světa, zkoumá politický kontext a následně se věnuje otázkám legitimity domácích vlád a vlivu médií společně s lidskoprávními skupinami. Následně druhá část zkoumá obě sportovní akce společně a porovnává je z hlediska, jak hostitelské země využívají tyto mega akce jako nástroje domácí vládní legitimity, a to navzdory kontroverzím a kontrolám týkajícím se jejich politického kontextu a stavu lidských práv. Srovnáním historických a současných případů si práce vytyčuje druhý cíl týkající se vlivu médií a lidskoprávních skupin před, při i po konání samotných turnajů.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the intersection of football, politics and human rights through a comparative analysis of the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina and the most recent FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022. The first part focuses more generally on the two championships separately. It looks at events relating to the period during the election of countries to host the World Cup, examines the political context and then explores issues of the legitimacy of domestic governments and the influence of the media alongside human rights groups. Subsequently, the second part examines the two sporting events together and compares them in terms of how host countries use these mega-events as instruments of domestic governmental legitimacy, despite controversies and scrutiny regarding their political context and human rights records. By comparing historical and contemporary cases, the thesis sets out a second objective concerning the influence of the media and human rights groups before, during and after the tournaments themselves.
