European Monetary Union – the current development, trends into the future

Abstract:

This thesis provides the reader a brief review of the European Unioin´s development, the European Monetary Union´s establishment and its functioning and assesses the performance of the convergence criteria by the countries of the Visegrad Four (V4): the Slovak Republic, the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary. The thesis decribes the convergence criteria set by The Treaty Establishing The European Community. They are: the inflation criterion (the criterion on price stability), the criterion of stability of long-term interest rates, exchange rate stability criterion and the criterion of public finance (the criterion of public debt and deficit). The fulfillment of these critera is different in the V4 countries and for better and easier orientation these values are processed into tables. In case of the Slovak Republic the state of economy is being assessed even before its entry into the European Union, in case of the other countries the implementation of the convergence criteria is being assessed after their entry into the EU, ie since 2004. The thesis also deals with the objectives of the European Monetary Union, financial integration and the orientation of the euro-area, which is largely influenced by the global financial crisis.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca poskytuje čitateľovi stručný prehľad o vývoji Európskej únie, o založení a fungovaní Európskej menovej únie a hodnotí sa v nej plnenie konvergenčných kritérií krajinami Vyšehradskej štvorky (V4), t.j. Slovenskom, Českou republikou, Poľskom a Maďarskom. Diplomová práca opisuje konvergenčné kritéria, ktoré stanovila Zmluva o založení Európskeho spoločenstva. Je to inflačné kritérium (kritérium cenovej stability), kritérium stability dlhodobých úrokových sadzieb, kritérium stability výmenného kurzu a kritérium verejných financií (kritérium verejného dlhu a deficitu). Plnenie týchto kritérií je rôzne krajinami V4, a z dôvodu lepšej a ľahšej orientácii sú tieto hodnoty v diplomovej práci spracované do tabuliek. V prípade Slovenskej republiky sa hodnotí stav ekonomiky aj pred jej vstupom do Európskej únie, v prípade ostatných krajín sa hodnotí plnenie konvergenčných kritérií až po ich vstupe do EÚ, t.j. od roku 2004. Diplomová práca sa zaoberá aj cieľmi Európskej menovej únie, finančnou integráciou a smerovaním eurozóny, ktoré je v značnej miere ovplyvnené globálnou finančnou krízou.
