The influence of the investor attention on the communication services sector

Anotace:

Šmídová, P. Vliv pozornosti investorů na sektor komunikačních služeb. Bakalářská práce. Brno: Mendelova univerzita v Brně, 2021. Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá identifikací vztahu mezi výnosností akcií ze sektoru komunikačních služeb a vybranými proměnnými za pomocí korelační analýzy. Hlavním zkoumaným faktorem byl sentiment investorů ve formě objemu vyhledávání ticker symbolu z aplikace Google Trends. Za dodatečné proměnné byla zvolena výnosnost trhu a bezriziková výnosová míra. První část empirické práce se věnuje vztahu mezi výnosností jednotlivých akcií a ostatními proměnnými z všeobecného hlediska. Druhá část zkoumá, zda a případně, jak ovlivnil sentiment investorů skandál Facebooku a Cambridge Analytica z března 2018. Výsledky ukázaly, že skandál neměl vliv na sentiment v daném sektoru, a to ani v případě akcie Facebooku. Ze sledovaných proměnných s výnosností akcií koreluje pouze výnosnost trhu, vyjma negativního vztahu mezi výnosností akcie Alphabetu A a sentimentem v období po skandálu.

Šmídová, P. The influence of the investor attention on the communication services sector. Bachelor thesis. Brno: Mendel University, 2021. This bachelor thesis deals with identification of the relation between stock returns from the communication services sector and chosen variables by using correlation analysis. The main factor that had been researched was the sentiment of the investors in the form of search intensity of ticker symbol from the Google Trends application. The stock market returns and risk-free rate were selected as the additional variables. The first part of the empirical work focuses on the relation between the returns of the individual stocks and other variables from the general point of view. The other part investigates the issues whether and alternatively how the Facebook and Cambridge Analytica scandal in March 2018 influenced the investor sentiment. The results showed that the scandal had no influence on the sentiment in the particular sector, even in the case of the stock of Facebook. From the observed variables, only stock market returns correlate with the stock returns, apart from the negative relation between the stock returns of Alphabet A and the sentiment in the time span after the scandal.
