Self-encrypting drives: collection and visualization of features

Abstract:

Disky s hardwarovým šifrováním jsou čím dál častější. S mnoha novými standardy však přichází otázky týkající se dodržování slibované funkcionality a bezpečnosti disků. Tato práce se zaměřuje na hardwarové šifrování disků a jeho realizace podle standardů Opal a Pyrite od skupiny Trusted Computing Group. Práce zkoumá několik způsobů šifrování disků a rozdíly mezi nimi. Následně je navržen a implementován nástroj, který umožňuje vizualizovat rozdíly mezi nahlášenou funckionalitou dostupných disků a přidání dodatečných informací ke každému disku. Nakonec je provedena analýza 38 disků, při které je zkoumáno jejich dodržování odpovídajících standardů a přítomnost nepovinné funkcionality.

Abstract:

These days, drives with hardware encryption are becoming more and more common. However, with the plethora of existing standards and sub-standards, one can start to doubt the promised functionality and security of the drives. This work focuses on hardware disk encryption and its realization using standards Opal and Pyrite provided by the Trusted Computing Group. It explores multiple solutions used to gather information about encrypted drives and the differences between them. A tool is then designed, which allows the user to visualize differences between the reported capabilities of each drive and any additional information uploaded during testing. Finally, an analysis of 38 drives is done to determine their compliance with their standards and the presence of any optional features.
