Přímá volba prezidenta republiky je politickým, avšak též ústavněprávním tématem. Představitelé naší politické scény o něm vedli vážnější diskuze již ke konci roku 1989. Jednotlivé návrhy na zavedení přímé volby hlavy státu se v minulosti pravidelně objevovaly v souvislosti s prezidentskými volbami a volební kampaní v parlamentních volbách.
