Guns in the Hands of Children: Child Soldiers in Africa

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je analyzovat problematiku využívání dětských vojáků v Africe. Práce poskytuje základní charakteristiku daného tématu, je zaměřena na identifikaci regionů, kde jsou využíváni dětští vojáci. Představuje vybrané základní prameny práva týkající se postavení, práv a ochrany dětských vojáků. Dále pak analyzuje faktory vedoucí děti k zapojení do ozbrojených sil a skupin a zabývá se způsoby, jakými jsou děti rekrutovány. Děti neplní pouze role aktivních bojovníků, ale vykonávají další funkce v ozbrojených silách či skupinách, kterým je také věnována pozornost. Jsou zároveň představeny mezinárodní organizace, které hrají významnou roli v prevenci zapojení dětí do ozbrojených sil a skupin a také v reintegraci dětí zasažených konfliktem do původní společnosti. Další část práce analyzuje využívání dětí jako vojáků v Demokratické republice Kongo a v Libérii a pomocí komparativní metody zkoumá specifika využívání dětských vojáků v těchto dvou zemích. Závěr práce je věnován praktickým doporučením v oblasti prevence rekrutace dětských vojáků a také jejich reintegrace do původní společnosti.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the issue of the use of child soldiers in Africa. The thesis provides the basic characteristics of the topic and is focused on identifying regions where child soldiers are being used. It presents fundamental legal documents relating to the status, rights and protection of child soldiers. Moreover, it analyzes the factors leading to the involvement of children in armed forces and groups and addresses the ways in which children are being recruited. Children do not only play active role as combatants, but they also have another functions in the armed forces or groups, which are presented in the thesis. International organizations that play an important role in preventing the involvement of children in armed forces and groups and also in the reintegration of children affected by conflict to their original society are also mentioned. The next part of the thesis analyzes the use of child soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Liberia. Thanks to comparative method thesis examines the specifics of the use of child soldiers in these two countries. The conclusion part is devoted to practical recommendations regarding the prevention of recruitment of child soldiers and their reintegration into their original society.
