Abstract:

Svědkové Jehovovi jsou náboženská skupina, která vznikla v 70. letech 19. století ve Spojených státech pod vlivem milenialismu Milleritů. Tvrdí, že mají více než 5 milionů stoupenců po celém světě. V USA jsou legálně zapsáni od roku 1884 jako Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, ve Velké Británii jako International Bible Students Assoctiation od roku 1914. Zakladatel C. T. Russel působil jako prezident společnosti do své smrti v roce 1916. Schopné vedení jeho a jeho nástupců (J. F. Rutherford, N. Knorr a F. Franz) výrazně přispělo ke stabilitě a rozšíření organizace. Svědkové (stávající název společnost přijala roku 1931) mají silnou vazbu na svou vlastní literaturu. Časopisy Strážná věž (the Watchtower) a Probuďte se!, které vycházejí jednou za dva týdny, jsou důležitým zdrojem informací o jejich víře a praktikách. V životě Svědka je důležité aktivně šířit víru (svědčit) a docházet na pravidelná setkání v tzv. Sálech království, kde se oddávají studiu již zmíněné literatury a nácviku rekrutování nových členů. Svědkové Jehovovi používají vlastní překlad Bible zvaný Překlad nového světa (the New World Translation, revised edition, 1984). Pravidelně vydávají Ročenky (Yearbook), které podrobně dokládají počet členů a růstové statistiky za uplynulý rok. Tato náboženská společnost věří, že se Kristus vrátí na Zemi a ustanoví zde své království. Přes četná zklamání a nové výpočty data, kdy má k této události dojít, si Svědkové zachovávají svou apokalyptickou horlivost, především díky jejich silné institucionální identitě a stabilitě.

Abstract:

Jehovah‘s Witnesses are a sect which arose in the 1870s under the influence of Miller’s millennialism. They claim to have more than 5 million members worldwide. In the USA they are legally incorporated as Watchtower Bible and Tract Society since 1884 and in the UK they got incorporated in 1914 as International Bible Students Association. The founder C. T. Russel served as president until his death in 1916. The able leadership of his succesors (J. F. Rutherford, N. Knorr a F. Franz) significantly contributed to the stability and expansion of the organization. Jehovah’s Witnesses (they adopted their current name in 1931) have a strong adherence to their literature. Magazines The Watchtower and Awake! are issued biweekly and they are important sources of information about their practice and beliefs. In the Witnesses’ lives it is important to witness – i.e.: spread their faith – and come to the regular meetings in the Kingdom Halls, where they study the already mentioned literature and practice recruiting of new members. Jehovah’s Witnesses use their own Bible translation called The New World Translation (revised edition, 1984). They regularly issue Yearbooks which contain the number of the members and growth statistics for the previous year. They believe in Christ’s second come (advent) and in founding of his millennial kingdom. In spite of numerous disappointments and new calculations of this event they still keep their apocalyptical enthusiasm, mainly for their strong institutional identity and stability.
