Epilinguistic Approach to the Attitude of Teenagers in Quebec towards the Contact between French and English in Quebec

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the relationship between teenagers in Quebec and the contemporary language situation in Quebec. It focuses on young people’s view on language planning; as well as, the specifics of occurrence, distribution, and use of English loanwords in everyday speech. The analysis, based on quantitative and qualitative research in the field (Gatineau, Montreal, Quebec, Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier), consists of 683 questionnaires and with more than 7 hours of recorded interviews. The purpose of the questionnaire survey in 2012 was to find out the attitude of young people aged between 12 and 18 towards the threat of French by English. The questionnaire consisted of questions about the dynamics of distribution of five preselected categories of Anglicisms (deadline, lousse, skill, job, noob) and about epilinguistic teenagers’opinions on language planning in Quebec. In 2013, the quantitative survey was completed with the qualitative one to observe the dynamics of the distribution of Anglicisms and variety of young people’s attitudes. The respondents were divided into three groups according to their language capacities to discover if monolingualism, bilingualism or multilingualism has the crucial role in the diversification of their opinions. Other applied factors were age, sex and residence. The main objective of this thesis was the empirical verification of generally widespread assumptions concerning the attitude of young people’s view on language situation in Quebec.

Abstract:

Tato dizertační práce pojednává o vztahu dospívajících Québečanů k současné jazykové situaci v Québecu. Zkoumá pohled mladých ve věku 12-18 let na jazykovou politiku a na specifika výskytu, šíření a používání anglicismů v každodenní komunikaci. Analýzy vycházejí z kvantitativního a kvalitativního výzkumu v terénu ve čtyřech quebeckých městech (Gatineau, Montreal, Québec, Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier), jehož výsledkem je korpus obsahující 683 dotazníků a více než 7 hodin nahrávek rozhovorů. Dotazníkové šetření, které proběhlo na jaře 2012, vychází z otázek na dynamiku šíření pěti vybraných anglicismů (deadline, lousse, skill, job, noob) a na názory adolescentů na jazykovou politiku. Cílem tohoto šetření bylo zjistit postoj mladých k ohrožení francouzštiny angličtinou. Kvantitativní výzkum byl na jaře 2013 doplněn o kvalitativní výzkum za účelem pozorování dynamiky šíření anglicismů a pestrosti názorů, které mládež má. Respondenti byli rozděleni do tří skupin podle jejich jazykové vybavenosti s cílem zjistit, zda monolingvnost, bilingvnost či plurilingvnost hrají hlavní roli při diverzifikaci jejich názorů. Dalšími faktory byly věk, pohlaví a geografická příslušnost. Hlavním cílem této práce bylo empirické ověření obecně rozšířených hypotéz týkajících se postoje mladých k jazykové situaci v Québecu.
