Automatic Tree Reconstruction from its Laser Scan

Abstract:

Stromy jsou důležitou součástí ekosystémů Země, a tudíž hrají významnou roli v rozličných simulacích a analýzách. Výsledky těchto aplikací jsou silně závislé na správnosti a přesnosti vstupních parametrů, včetně statistických analýz mnoha strukturálních, optických a jiných vlastností stromů ve studované oblasti. Rozsáhlé (a často destruktivní) měření v terénu jsou obvykle třeba k získání požadovaných dat s dostatečnou přesností. Některé aplikace (jako například Studie Radiativního Transferu -- DART Simulace prováděné oddělením dálkového průzkumu Země na Centru výzkumu globální změny AV ČR, v. v. i. (CzechGlobe)) vyžadují 3D modely stromů ve studované oblasti. Ačkoliv je možné vytvořit 3D makety založené na naměřených parametrech, virtuální modely skutečných stromů by velmi zvýšily přesnost vypočítaných výsledků. Snímací technologie LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) se běžně používá pro zachycování struktury stromů, je však schopna zachytit pouze izolované body bez jakýchkoli vztahů mezi nimi. Ačkoliv existuje několik metod na rekonstrukci stromů na základě LiDAR skenů, žádná z nich není aplikovatelná na data se kterými CzechGlobe pracuje. Důvodem je obtížnost získání dostatečně přesných dat ve vysokém rozlišení pro dospělé smrky (kvůli velkým "mezerám" na bodových mračnech způsobených olistěním stromu), nebo se navržené metody nezaměřují na přesnou rekonstrukci větví (což by ovšem vyústilo v nepřesnosti při následném použití). Tato práce analyzuje existující metody, vyhodnocuje jejich použitelnost pro specifický typ zdrojových dat, navrhuje novou, plně automatickou metodu pro rekonstrukci stromů založenou na jejich laserových skenech a popisuje její implementaci a vyhodnocení.

Abstract:

Trees are an important part of the Earth's ecosystems and thus often play an important role in various simulations and analyses. The results of these applications strongly depend on the correctness and precision of the input parameters, including statistical analyses of many structural, optical, and other properties of the trees in the studied area. Extensive (and often destructive) field-work measuring is usually required to obtain desired data with sufficient precision. Certain applications (such as Radiative Transfer Study -- DART Simulations carried out by the Remote Sensing department of the Global Change Research centre AS CR, v.v.i (CzechGlobe)) require 3D models of the trees in the studied area. Although it is possible to create 3D mock-ups based on the measured parameters, virtual models of the real trees would highly improve precision of the calculated results. LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) sensing technology is commonly used for capturing tree structure. However, the technology is able just to perceive individual points without any relations among them. Even though several methods for tree reconstructions based on LiDAR scans already exist, none is applicable on the data the CzechGlobe centre is working with -- the reasons are that the required precise and high-resolution LiDAR scans are very hard to obtain for mature spruce trees (because of large "gaps" in the point cloud induced by the tree foliage), or the proposed methods do not focus on precise reconstruction of branches (which, however, would result in an inaccuracy in the subsequent use). This thesis analyzes existing methods, evaluates their usability for the specific type of data sets, proposes a novel, fully-automated method for tree reconstructions based on their laser scans and describes its implementation and evaluation.
