The role of structure of xylem in acclimation of plants to drought

Abstract:

Během životního cyklu je rostlina vystavena různým podmínkám prostředí. Z hlediska jejího přežití jsou však důležité podmínky extrémní, které mohou způsobit její stres. Tento stres může ovlivnit i rostlinné vodivé pletiva – xylém. Cílem této práce je tedy shrnout aktuální informace o změnách ve struktuře vodivých pletiv rostlin, ke kterým dochází při působení sucha a také známé souvislosti s fyziologickými důsledky těchto změn. V práci jsou popsány změny na úrovni vodivých elementů (délka, průměr vodivých elementů), změny ve struktuře ztenčenin a zastoupení různých typů buněk v xylému. Popsány jsou také procesy, ke kterým dochází při působení sucha (embólie, imploze buněčné stěny) a citlivost jednotlivých strukturních znaků k jejich vzniku. V závěru jsou pak představeny nápravné mechanismy, které obnovují funkci vodivých elementů, nebo celého vodivého systému a zapojení strukturních znaků do jejich realizace.

Abstract:

During the life cycle, the plant is exposed to various environmental conditions. Important are the extreme conditios that can cause stress. This stress can also affect plant conductive system – xylem. The aim of this work is to summarize the current information about changes in the structure of conductive tissue of plants that occur under stress, as well as the known connection with the physiological consequences of these changes. The paper describes changes in conductive elements (length, diameter of conductive elements), changes in the structure of membrane pits and present of different types of cells in xylem. Described are also processes that occur during drought (embolism, cell wall implosion) and the sensitivity of individual structural features. In the end are described corrective mechanisms which restore the function of the conductive elements or the whole conductive system and the integration of the structural features into their realization
