Exam postponement in relationship to fear of failure, perfectionism and self-regulation

Abstract:

K životu vysokoškolského studenta neodmyslitelně patří zkoušky. Někteří studenti však své zkoušky často odkládají. Toto odkládání může mít různé příčiny. Cílem výzkumu bylo zjistit, jak odkládání zkoušek ovlivňuje perfekcionismus a jestli spolu tyto dva konstrukty souvisí. Do výzkumu byly také zahrnuty další proměnné, které bývají často spojovány právě s perfekcionismem i s odkládáním. Těmi dalšími proměnnými byla self-efficacy, svědomitost a testová úzkost. Data od 157 respondentů byla získána pomocí série dotazníků, konkrétně byla použita Frostova Multidimenzionální škála perfekcionismu, Dotazník obecné vlastní efektivity, škála Svědomitosti (BFI-44), Dotazník motivace výkonu (D-M-V). Teoretická část se věnovala popisu jednotlivých konstruktů, praktické pak zpracovávání a interpretaci dat. Naše data podpořila multidimenzionální teorii perfekcionismu. Škály Osobní standardy výkonu, Rodičovská kritika a Organizovanost statisticky významně korelovaly s odkládáním zkoušek. Nejtěsněji však s odkládáním zkoušek korelovala Svědomitost, která pak byla jediným statisticky významným prediktorem odkládání zkoušek.

Abstract:

Exams are a fundamental part of a university student's life. However, some students often postpone their exams. This postponement can have various causes. The aim of the research was to find out how perfectionism affects postponing exams and whether these two constructs are related. Other variables in the research were included, which are often associated with perfectionism and procrastination. The other variables were self-efficacy, conscientiousness, and test anxiety. The data from 157 respondents were obtained using a series of questionnaires. Specifically we used the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, the General Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, the Conscientiousness Scale (BFI-44), and the Performance Motivation Questionnaire (D-M-V). The theoretical part was focused on the description of individual constructs, whereas the practical part was focused on data processing and interpretation. The collected data supported the multidimensional theory of perfectionism. The scales Personal Performance Standards, Parental Criticism, and Organization were statistically significantly correlated with postponing exams. However, Conscientiousness correlated most closely with the postponing of examination, which was then the only statistically significant predictor of postponing of exams.
