Abstract:

Chartism was a mass working-class movement for universal male suffrage and parliamentary reform in early Victorian Britain. This bachelor thesis analyses the Chartist movement and its relationship to the social classes of Victorian society. Although each of the social classes perceived the movement distinctly, the perceptions also varied within the social classes, especially the middle and working classes, due to their internal diversity. These two social classes demonstrated a certain extent of cross-class influence and cooperation, while the upper class sought to maintain the social establishment with its monopoly on power. Therefore, Chartism was shaped not only by the differences between the social classes but also by the diversity of the working and middle classes.

Abstract:

Chartismus bylo hnutí dělnické třídy za všeobecné volební právo a reformu parlamentu v raně viktoriánské Británii. Tato bakalářská práce analyzuje chartistické hnutí a jeho vztah k jednotlivým společenským třídám tehdejší společnosti. Přestože je možné obecně rozlišit, jakým způsobem každá ze společenských tříd hnutí vnímala, tak se toto vnímání značně lišilo i v rámci jednotlivých tříd, a to především ve střední a dělnické třídě, což bylo dáno jejich vnitřní rozmanitostí. Právě tyto dvě třídy vykazovaly určitou míru vzájemného ovlivňování a spolupráce, zatímco vyšší třída se snažila zachovat současné společenské uspořádání, ve kterém držela monopol moci. Chartismus tak nebyl utvářen pouze sociálními rozdíly jednotlivých tříd, nýbrž také rozmanitostí dělnické a střední třídy.
