International Conflict Management, the United States and Northern Ireland: Determinants of George J. Mitchell's successful mediation in Northern Ireland multi-party talks, 1996-1998 This Ph.D. dissertation is a contribution to the scientific debate about international mediation, which is the most frequently used form of non-violent third party intervention in all types of conflicts. Specifically, on the basis of a qualitative case study, it analyses the determinants of former U. S. Senator George Mitchell's successul mediation effort in Northern Ireland multi-party talks (19961998). These lengthy and complicated negotiations eventually culminated in the signing of the so-called Good Friday Agreement in 1998, which ended three decades of ethno-nationalist violence in this British province and transformed the conflict to the political level. The research goal of this thesis is to identify the factors which determined the success of U. S. mediation in the Northern Irish peace process.

Abstract:

Disertační práce je příspěvkem do odborné debaty o problematice mezinárodní mediace, která je vůbec nejvyužívanější metodou nenásilné intervence do řešení všech forem konfliktů. Konkrétně na základě kvalitativní případové studie analyzuje determinanty úspěchu mediace bývalého amerického senátora George J. Mitchella v mírových jednáních hlavních politických stran v Severním Irsku (1996-1998). Tato vleklá a komplikovaná jednání nakonec vedla k podpisu tzv. Velkopáteční dohody v roce 1998, která ukončila tři desetiletí trvající etno-nacionalistické násilí v této britské provincii a transformovala konflikt na politickou úroveň. Výzkumným záměrem práce je zjistit, které faktory determinovaly úspěšnost americké mediace v severoirském mírovém procesu.
