Revision of the narrative about the film Children Without Love (1963)

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá filmem Děti bez lásky s cílem zjistit, jestli mohl mít takový ohlas a vliv, jaký se mu dnes přisuzuje. Upozorňuji na nedostatek přímých důkazů některých tvrzení mimo rozhovory s tvůrci a v nich obsažené nesrovnalosti. Tato tvrzení konfrontuji s výsledky archivního výzkumu a rešerše dobového tisku. Prezentuji množství informací o produkci filmu, jeho distribuci v kinech a na filmových festivalech a diváckém a kritickém přijetí. Zásadním výsledkem je zpochybnění narativu o zákazu filmu a povolení po úspěchu na festivalu v Benátkách. Dále se práce zabývá tím, jaké jsou ve filmu použity strategie k přesvědčení diváků o nedostatcích kolektivní péče o děti. Film je analyzován za pomocí konceptů rétorické formy a hlasu dokumentárního filmu. Zaměřuji se na prostředky použity k vytváření kontrastu mezi dětmi, zdůraznění samoty těch v ústavním prostředí a jak jsou ve filmu uspořádány argumenty ze zdroje a argumenty zaměřené na diváka. Výsledkem mé práce je určení hlavních použitých prostředků a potvrzení, že apely na emoce jsou ve filmu rámovány v kontextu odborníkova vysvětlení problematiky.

Abstract:

This bachelor´s thesis is focused on the film Children Without Love with the aim to determine if it could have had such a reaction and influence that is attributed to it today. I note the lack of direct evidence for some claims apart from interviews with the producers and the discrepancies in them. I confront these claims with the results of my archival research and research of contemporary press. I present a quantity of information about the film´s production, its distribution in cinemas and foreign festivals and its reception among audiences and critics. The crucial result of my research is challenging of the narrative about the film´s ban and release after its success at the Venice Film Festival. Afterwards the thesis deals with what strategies the movie uses to persuade the viewer about the negative consequences of collective childcare. The film´s form is analyzed using concepts of rhetorical form and the voice of the documentary film. I focus on the means used to create a contrast between children in family and institutional environments and how the film orders arguments from source and viewer centered arguments. The result of this thesis is the determination of the main used strategies and confirmation that appeals to emotions in the film are framed in the context of an expert´s explanation of the issue.
