Bottom-up approach in short-term GDP forecasting

Abstract:

The main goal of the diploma thesis is to empirically evaluate usefulness of the bottom-up approach in building short-term forecasts of gross domestic product. The bottom-up approach is based on forecast-ing individual components and their subsequent aggregation into a single prediction about the future development of the studied variable. In the literary research, the relevant literature addressing GDP forecasts is presented alongside the articles dealing with the bottom-up approach. In the next section, the background to the disaggregation of GDP into components, the data used and the method of weighting the components are discussed. The second-to-last section is devoted to the methodology and description of the ARIMA and VAR models that were used in the construction of the recursive forecasts. The last section presents the results obtained across the periods, prediction horizons and model categories studied.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto diplomovej práce je empirické zhodnotenie prínosu bottom-up prístupu pri tvorbe krátkodobých predikcií hrubého domáceho produktu. Bottom-up prístup je založený na prognózovaní jednotlivých komponentov a ich následnej agregácii do jednej predikcie o budúcom vývoji skúmanej veličiny. V literárnej rešerši je popri článkoch, ktoré sa venujú bottom-up prístupu, predstavená aj literatúra zaoberajúca sa predikciami HDP. V ďalšej časti sú rozobraté východiská delenia HDP na komponenty, použité dáta a spôsob váženia samotných komponentov. Predposledná časť je venovaná metodológií a popisu ARIMA a VAR modelov, ktoré boli použité pri tvorbe rekurzívnych predikcií. V poslednej časti sú predstavené získané výsledky naprieč skúmanými obdobiami, predikčnými horizontmi a modelovými kategóriami.
