Investigation of leather chasubles deposited in Moravian Gallery (Brno) collections

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá průzkumem kožených kasulí, datovaných do 18. st., uložených ve sbírkách Moravské galerie v Brně. Cílem historického průzkumu bylo dohledání dalších kožených kasulí a podobných prací na území České republiky a v sousedních zemích, případně určení místa původu zhotovení zkoumaných předmětů a s tím spojené datace vzniku kasulí. Součástí historického průzkumu bylo i určení možných technik a způsobů zdobení. Cílem konzervátorského průzkumu bylo zjistit druh usně, použité ke zhotovení kasulí, a to pomocí stereomikroskopu. Proměření pH dotykovou elektrodou byl zjištěn stav degradace usní. Stav materiálu byl dále určen zjištěním teploty smrštění a to za použití mikroskopu s elektricky vyhřívaným stolkem s kontrolovaným chodem (Micro Hot Table) a termickou analýzou, konkrétně Diferenční kompenzační (skenovaní) kalorimetrií DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry). Ke stanovení způsobu činění bylo využito jak kapkovacích testů (Spot Tests) i dříve zjištěné teploty smrštění. V případě textilních částí byl určen druh textilních vláken a to pozorováním v optickém mikroskopu, zkouškami rozpustnosti a spalování vláken. Součástí práce byl i základní konzervátorský zásah a doporučení k ukládání a vystavování.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with exploration of leather chasubles from 18th century that are deposited in collections of the Moravian Gallery in Brno. The aim of the historical survey was to find out other leather chasubles and similar artefacts in the Czech Republic and in the neighbouring contries, eventually to determine the place and time of chasubles origin. A part of this historical survey was focused on providing information about fabrication and decoration techniques. The conservation research was aimed at the identification of leather, that the chasubles were made of, using namely a stereomicroscope. The degradation statement was determined by pH measuring using a contact electrode. The material status was further examined by shrinkage temperature measurements, using Micro Hot Table and Differential Scanning Calorimetry. The way of tanning was determined both by the Spot Tests method and also by shrinkage temperature experiments. The textile determinations were based on optical microscope observations of the textile fibres, examination of their solubility and combustion. One of aims of this work was to suggest an essential conservational intervention and recommendations for chasubles storaging and exhibiting.
