Change detection on agriculture land: synergy of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je zaměřena na posouzení přínosnosti synergického využití dat z družic Sentinel-1 a Sentinel-2 k detekci změn na zemědělské půdě, konkrétně změn nastalých na orné půdě a trvalém travním porostu. Literární rešerše stručně popisuje základní principy dálkového průzkumu Země, charakterizuje spektrální vlastnosti vybraných povrchů a představuje družice Sentinel-1 a Sentinel-2 a jejich data, která jsou v této práci využita. Analýza byla provedena na zájmovém území v zemědělské oblasti Libereckého kraje za období let 2015 až 2020. Součástí metodiky byl pre-processing optických i radarových dat, jejich klasifikace pomocí klasifikátoru Random Forest, vyhodnocení přesnosti klasifikace, srovnání s referenčními daty LPIS (Land Parcel Identification System) a tvorba normalizovaného diferenčního vegetačního indexu NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) na plochách orné půdy a trvalého travního porostu. Výzkum vyhodnotil klasifikátor Random Forest jako velmi vhodný pro mapování změn na zemědělské půdě, přesnost určení orné půdy dosahovala až 90 % za použití synergie dat. Trendy ve změnách na zemědělské půdě zjištěné v této práci odpovídají trendům detekovaným statistickými údaji a ostatními studiemi zabývajícími se touto problematikou. Výsledky analýzy slouží k objasnění trendu ve změnách na zemědělské půdě v České republice a k porovnání vhodnosti synergického využití radarových dat Sentinel-1 a optických dat Sentinel-2 pro detekci těchto změn.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is focused on the description of possible utilization of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 remote sensed data for agriculture change detection in the Czech Republic, specifically changes in cropland and grassland. The literature review briefly defines the concept of remote sensing, describes the spectral characteristics of selected types of land cover and presents Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellites and their data. Analysis was conducted on an agricultural area of interest in the Liberecký region covering the years 2015–2020. Methodology consists of optical and radar data pre-processing, classification of data using the Random Forest classification method, classification accuracy assessment, comparison with LPIS (Land Parcel Identification System) reference data and time analysis of cropland and grassland NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) values. This research had evaluated the Random Forest classifier as very suitable for mapping changes on agricultural land, the accuracy of cropland determination reached up to 90 % using the synergetic data approach. The trends in changes on agricultural land were found to be corresponding to those detected by statistical data and other similar studies. Results of the analysis are used to clarify the land use change trend on agricultural land in the Czech Republic and to assess the possible utilization of synergic use of Sentinel data for detection of these changes.
