Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vlivem změny režimu tradičně udržovaných občin na životní prostředí v regionu Karamoja v Ugandě a snaží se odhalit příčiny současné environmentální degradace v dané oblasti. Za pomoci teoretických souvislostí konceptů občin, modernizace a rozvoje se práce snaží analyzovat proces změn od tradičního, pravděpodobně udržitelného, životního stylu k současnému životnímu stylu, který má negativní dopady na životní prostředí. Na základě terénního výzkumu tato práce identifikuje faktory, které vedly k nutnosti pozměnit původní mobilní pastevecký způsob života a přijmout nové výdělečné aktivity, které spoléhají na neudržitelné využívání přírodních zdrojů, zejména dřeva, a způsobují environmentální degradaci. Práce čerpající inspiraci z přístupu politické ekologie odhaluje strukturní příčiny současné environmentální degradace, které pramení z dlouhodobé snahy změnit tradiční pastevecký způsob života Karimojongů.

Abstract:

The master´s thesis deals with the effect of the change of the traditional commons management on the environment in the Karamoja region in Uganda and its aim is to reveal the causes of the contemporary environmental degradation in the region. With the help of the theoretical concepts such as commons, modernization and development, the thesis analyses the process of change from the traditional, presumably sustainable, lifestyle to the contemporary lifestyle, which has negative impacts on the environment. On the ground of the field research this work identifies factors which have led the Karimojong to the necessity of changing their traditional mobile pastoral way of life and adopting new income generating activities which depend on unsustainable use of natural resources, especially of wood, and cause environmental degradation. Drawing upon the political ecology approach, this work reveals structural causes of contemporary environmental degradation which originate from long term efforts to change the traditional pastoral lifestyle of the Karimojong.
