Neological intuition in lexicographic practice and in the opinions of the speakers

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the issue of the neological intuition of native French speakers in connection with the lexicographic practice applied by the largest producers of French dictionaries to various types of neologisms. The material starting point was eight lexemes newly included or not included in the reference dictionaries Le Petit Robert and Le Petit Larousse, so that different categories could be represented, especially lexical borrowings, regionalisms and slangisms. A survey of a sample of 100 respondents used an electronic questionnaire to examine these lexemes, how well they are known and whether they should be anchored in the lexical system by inclusion in a general monolingual dictionary. The theoretical part of the thesis defines basic neological concepts, especially in terms of sociolinguistics and lexicography. The methodological part describes the various stages of creating a questionnaire and the pitfalls of this type of testing. The practical part evaluates the neological intuitions and arguments of a hundred francophone native speakers, which are presented first in terms of individual lexemes and then according to established hypotheses. According to the respondents, it was verified that lexemes perceived as occasionalism (e.g. coronapéro, djomb) have little chance of integration into dictionaries. It was further confirmed that the lexemes that were newly included in the reference dictionaries were not considered by most respondents to be neologisms (e.g. avoir le seum, poutouner). However, the correlation between ignorance of the lexeme and its categorization among neologisms has not been proved.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá otázkou neologického pocitu rodilých mluvčích francouzštiny v souvislosti s lexikografickou praxí, kterou uplatňují největší producenti francouzských slovníků vůči různým typům neologismů. Materiálovým východiskem se stalo osm lexémů nově zařazených či nezařazených do referenčních slovníků Le Petit Robert a Le Petit Larousse, tak aby byly zastoupeny různé kategorie, zejména výpůjčky, regionalismy a slangismy. Šetřením na vzorku sta respondentů bylo pomocí elektronického dotazníku u těchto lexémů zkoumáno, nakolik jsou známé a zda by měly být ukotveny v lexikálním systému formou zařazení do všeobecného monolingvního slovníku. Teoretická část práce definuje základní neologické pojmy, zejména z hlediska sociolingvistiky a lexikografie. Metodologická část popisuje jednotlivé fáze tvorby dotazníku a úskalí tohoto typu testování. V praktické části jsou evaluovány neologické pocity a argumenty sta frankofonních mluvčích, které jsou prezentovány nejprve z hlediska jednotlivých lexémů a následně dle stanovených hypotéz. Bylo ověřeno, že lexémy vnímané jako okazionalismy (např. coronapéro, djomb) mají podle respondentů malou šanci na integraci do slovníků. Dále bylo potvrzeno, že lexémy, které byly nově zařazené do referenčních slovníků většina respondentů nepovažovala za neologismy (např. avoir le seum, poutouner). Nicméně korelace mezi neznalosti lexému a jeho kategorizací mezi neologismu prokázána nebyla.
