The Film and Television Adaptations of the Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and the Discourse Analysis of the Netherfield Ball

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with a famous work Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen. In particular I pay attention to dialogues between the main characters of the novel, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, and to the fundamental part of the chapter related to the Netherfield ball. In the first part of my thesis I state basic information about the author, main features of her writing style and the period when her famous work was written. In the second part, I stress substantial features of the novel followed by a brief description of main and secondary characters and the most common topics of the author. The third part deals with the period of Jane Austen and her work, typical features of fashion, balls and etiquette. The list and description of dances, which count among the most popular ones, is included in the previous part. In the penultimate chapter, I explain film adaptations, supplemented with a list of films and TV series. Subsequently, I describe chosen adaptations from 1940, 1980, 1995 and 2005.The final chapter includes an analysis of the dialogue between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy at the Netherfield ball. I focus mainly on what was omitted, added or changed by individual film-makers.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá nejslavnějším dílem autorky Jane Austenové Pýcha a Předsudek a to především dialogu hlavních postav Elizabeth Bennetové a Fitzwilliama Darcyho, který je součástí kapitoly pojednávající o plesu v Netherfieldu - stěžejní části celého příběhu. První část práce popisuje život samotné autorky, znaky její literární tvorby a období, ve kterém napsala své slavné romány. Ve druhé sekci popisuji hlavní znaky díla, uvádím stručnou charakteristiku jednotlivých hlavních a vedlejších postav a hlavní témata, které autorka v díle použila. Třetí část se zabývá charakteristikou období, do kterého tvorba Jane Austenové spadá, dále typickými znaky tehdejší módy, typickými znaky bálu a s ním spojené etikety a v neposlední řadě uvádím výčet a stručnou charakteristiku tanců, které patřily mezi nejpopulárnější. V předposlední části vysvětluji pojem filmová adaptace, uvádím výčet filmových a televizních verzí, které byly vytvořeny do dnešního dne. V této části jsem dále popsala vybrané adaptace z let 1940, 1980, 1995 a 2005. V poslední části své práce analyzuji rozhovor mezi hlavními představiteli románu Elizabeth Bennetové a Fitzwilliama Darcyho během tance na plesu v Netherfieldu. Mým hlavním cílem je srovnat jednotlivé výroky hlavních postav uvedené v románu s ekvivalenty použitými v jednotlivých adaptacích. Mým primárním cílem je zhodnotit, které části byly vynechány, doplněny nebo změněny.
