Gender marking in textbooks German as a foreign language

Abstract:

This work examines the means of gender expression and gender identity in German (DAF) textbooks. The analysis concentrates not only on the morphological and syntactic level, but also on the level of discourse. The aim of this thesis is to discover the ways of promoting gender in textbooks, the institutional guidelines and the role of the social and cultural environment of a particular country. This approach requires two different analytical methods: The linguistic part of the work (Schulbuchanalyse I) is based on the morphological, propositional and referential qualities of an observed word. The discursive analysis (Schulbuchanalyse II) refers to the concrete semantic content of the word. An important part of the thesis presents the gender from the perspective of the participants (pupils, teachers, publishers). It is necessary to address the issue of promoting gender in textbooks. Although the content of the textbooks has made a massive progress, some word connections and references, which are today considered stereotypical, still prevail in textbooks.

Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce zkoumá projevy genderu a genderové identity v učebnicích němčiny jako cizího jazyka. Předmětem zkoumání budou jak jazykové projevy, tak projevy na úrovni diskursu. Cílem práce je zjistit, jak je genderová identita v učebnicích prezentována, jaké jsou institucionální podmínky pro vznik učebnice a jakou roli hraje sociální a kulturně – společenské prostředí. Tento způsob zkoumání vyžaduje dvě rozličné formy analytického přístupu: lingvistická část práce (Schulbu-chanalyse I) zkoumá morfologické a propoziční vlastnosti a referenční schopnosti konkrétního výrazu. Diskursivní analýza (Schulbuchanalyse II) poukazuje na mimo-jazykový (sémantický) obsah slova. Důležitou roli hrají pro tuto práci i aktéři, kteří se podílejí na konstrukci genderové identity (žáci, učitelé, vydavatelé). Domnívám se, že gender v učebnicích představuje významný problém. Obsah učebnic sice po této stránce doznal změn, některé genderové stereotypy jsou nicméně v učebnicích stále přítomny.
