Body-building Ideals in the Culture of Fitness

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je výsledkem etnografického výzkumu s cílem poodkrýt žitou zkušenost specifické kategorie návštěvníků posiloven. Kategorie nekompetitivních kulturistů na pozadí historické proměny jak kultury fitness, tak profesionální kulturistické scény, získala novou podobu a prominentní pozici v rámci komerčních fitness center a dosud jí v sociálních vědách nebyla věnována dostatečná pozornost. Tato práce poskytuje základní vhled do přežívání kulturistického ideálu v kultuře fitness. Za tímto účelem bylo využito znalostí z knihy od Roberty Sassatelli, která kondenzuje poznatky o moderních fitness centrech a kultuře fitness obecně. Na tomto základě bylo porovnána odlišná žitá zkušenost ve sdíleném sociálním prostředí, vzájemné vymezování vůči kultuře fitness, ale i vůči vrcholové kulturistice. Součástí práce je identifikace čtyř ideálů: krása, zdraví, funkčnost a „být fit“, jako odlišných faktorů ideálního těla pro volnočasové kulturisty i běžné návštěvníky.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is the outcome of the ethnographical work with the objective to reveal the lived experience of a specific category of gym-goers. On a background of a historical shift in both fitness culture and professional competitive scene, the category of non-competitive body-builders got a new shape and a prominent position within commercial fitness centres and so far did not get a sufficient attention on a field of social studies. This thesis presents fundamental insight to the existence of body-building ideals within the fitness culture. To meet this objective, the book by Roberta Sassatelli which is a condensation of knowledge about the modern fitness centres and the fitness culture in general is used. Different lived experience within the shared social space, mutual definitions against fitness culture but against the professional body-building as well is compared with this grounding. The final part is about identification of four ideals: beauty, health, functionality and “being fit” as different factors for the perfect body of the “gym rats” and common gym-goers.
