Ecofeminist Perspective on Marge Piercy's Woman on the Edge of Time

Abstract:

This thesis presents an ecofeminist analysis of Marge Piercy's novel, Woman at the Edge of Time (1964). Drawing upon ecofeminist principles, the analysis explores the interconnected themes of violence against women and the pursuit of utopia. The study examines how the novel portrays the oppressive power structures that perpetuate violence against women, highlighting the parallel between the exploitation of women and the degradation of nature. It delves into the protagonist's journey, emphasising her resistance against violence and her encounters with the utopian society of Mattapoisett. By dismantling patriarchal systems, fostering equality, and recognizing the intrinsic value of both women and nature, the thesis will attempt to argues that a sustainable and just society can be envisioned and pursued. Ultimately aiming to highlight the transformative potential of ecofeminism in addressing violence against women and promoting a harmonious relationship with the natural world.

Abstract:

Tato práce představuje ekofeministickou analýzu románu Marge Piercyové Žena na hrane času (1964). Na základě ekofeministických principů analýza zkoumá vzájemně propojená témata násilí na ženách a snahy o utopii. Studie zkoumá, jak román zobrazuje utlačovatelské mocenské struktury, které udržují násilí na ženách, a zdůrazňuje paralelu mezi vykořisťováním žen a degradací přírody. Zabývá se cestou hlavní hrdinky, přičemž klade důraz na její odpor proti násilí a její setkání s utopickou společností v Mattapoisettu. Odbouráním patriarchálních systémů, podporou rovnosti a uznáním vnitřní hodnoty žen i přírody práce se snaží dokázat, že je možné představit si udržitelnou a spravedlivou společnost a usilovat o ni. V konečném důsledku se snaží vyzdvihnout rozvojoví potenciál ekofeminismu při řešení násilí na ženách a podpoře harmonického vztahu se světem přírody.
