Evangelical Fundamentalism: Science and Religion

Abstract:

Tato práce se stručně zabývá vznikem amerického fundamentalismu a zvláště jeho vztahu k moderní vědě s důrazem na historický a společenský kontext. Z toho důvodu jsou středem zájmu četné myšlenkové proudy v rozmezí let 1865-1925, protože z nich fundamentální hnutí při svém vzniku čerpalo své postoje a názory. První část tvoří stručný úvod do amerického evangelikalismu a představení směrů, které budou v práci diskutovány, tj. baptismu a presbyterianismu. Druhá část se zabývá situací ve Spojených státech po občanské válce. Cílem této části je seznámit čtenáře se skotskou filozofií zdravého rozumu, revivalismem, konzervativní a liberální teologií tohoto období, postmilenialismem a dispensacionálním premilenialismem a hnutím za posvěcený život. Pochopení základních myšlenek těchto myšlenkových proudů je nezbytné pro porozumění stanoviskům amerického fundamentalismu. Třetí část je věnována první světové válce a reakcí konzervativního protestantismu na tento konflikt. Poslední část se zabývá poválečnou situací v amerických protestantských církvích. Tato situace totiž odráží postoje konzervativců tohoto období a jejich názory na moderní společnost, zvláště na evoluční teorii a liberální teologii. Poválečné období se neslo ve znamení vzniku fundamentálního hnutí, jeho vrcholu a ztráty pozic, kterou ztělesňoval tzv. Scopesův opičí proces.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with an emergence of American fundamentalism and particulary with its relation to modern science. The main emphasis is laid on historical and social background. That is why the thesis is focused on various intellectual movements influential in years 1865-1925. As the fundamentalism gathers its views and positions from them. The first part provides short introduction into American evangelicalism and churches that will be discussed in the following parts. Namely Baptists and Presbytarians.The second part deals with a situation in the United States after the Civil War. The goal of this part is to make reader acquainted with Scotish Common Sense philosophy, revivalism, conservative and liberal theology of this period, postmillenialism and dispensational premillenialism and holiness movement. It is necessary to understand the main ideas of these movements as it makes the views and positions of fundamentalism clearer. The third part is devoted to the First World War and the reaction of conservative protestantism to this conflict. The last part deals with the situation in American protestant churches after the war. As this situation reflects possitions of conservatives of the time and their attitude towards modern society – mainly towards evolution a liberal theology. In this period fundamentalism emerged, reached its peak and lost its positions after the Scopes monkey trial.
