Abstract:

Cílem této práce je identifikovat a posoudit dopady britské koloniální správy na území dnešní Nigérie. Tato práce zkoumá jak negativními, tak pozitivními dopady britského vlivu na významné aspekty života. První část se zaměřuje na historické pozadí a jednotlivé etapy, které předcházely a nakonec vedly k přechodu k britské koloniální správě. Poté následuje koloniální společnost a reakce původních obyvatel na britskou nadvládu. Následující kapitola pojednává o politické správě země. Pátá kapitola zkoumá ekonomiku a její vývoj v průběhu koloniální éry. Sociálnímu rozvoji v oblasti vzdělání a zdravotnictví se věnuje předposlední kapitola. Závěrečná kapitola nastiňuje poslední fáze britské nadvlády a pokusy Nigérie o nezávislost. Provedením syntézy a analýzy informací zejména z akademických článků a učebnic dějepisu, ale také oficiálních dokumentů a statistik z koloniální éry, výsledky práce naznačují, že vliv kolonizace výrazně přispěl jak k rozvoji země, tak k její zaostalosti. Přestože britští kolonialisté zavedli moderní metody a pokročilou technologii v zemědělství, rozvinuli infrastrukturu, zlepšili vzdělání, nebo položili základy zdravotnické sítě, domorodci přišli o velké množství své půdy a utrpěli masivní ztrátu kulturní a etnické identity.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to identify and assess the impacts of the British colonial rule on the territory of today's Nigeria. The thesis explores both the negative and positive effects of the British influence on the significant aspects of life. The first part of the thesis focuses on the historical background and the individual stages which preceded and eventually led to the transition to British colonial rule. The colonial society and the natives' response to the British rule are provided afterwards. The following chapter discusses the political administration of the country. The fifth chapter examines the economy and its development during the colonial era. Social development covering education and health care is discussed in the penultimate chapter. The final chapter outlines the final stages of British domination and Nigeria's attempts for independence. By conducting the synthesis and analysis of the information from mainly academic articles and history books but also official documents and statistics from the colonial era, the findings of the thesis suggest that the impact of the colonisation contributed greatly to the country's development as well as underdevelopment. Although the British colonialists introduced modern methods and advanced technology in agriculture, developed infrastructure, improved education, and laid the foundations of the healthcare network, the natives lost a large amount of their land and suffered a massive loss of cultural and ethnic identity.
