Interaction of bentonite with EDTA

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to prepare bentonites modified by chelatone III (EDTA). Modified bentonites were prepared at different conditions in order to determine the impact of concentration and contact time of chelatone III solutions on bentonite. Cation and anion exchange capacities were measured for the resulting materials and these materials were characterized with infrared spectroscopy method. Contents of Ca, Mg and Fe were determined in the extracts after contact of bentonite with chelatone III. The values of cation and anion exchange capacities of the modified materials indicate that there is an increase of these values for all materials after contact with chelatone solutions with various concentrations when compared to natural bentonite. The values of exchange capacities decrease with the increasing concentration of chelatone and with increasing contact time. It is probable that during the contact some impurities (minerals) are removed from the bentonite leading to increased exchange capacity values. However, chelatone III partially dissolves octahedral nets of montmorillonite which causes decrease of exchange capacity values with increased chelatone concentration, which was confirmed by the infrared spectroscopy and analyses of extracts. Inconsistencies among the values obtained for concentration and contact time studies were detected which could be caused by other effects (e.g. agitating of suspension). Study of these effects could be the subject of further study of bentonite and chelatone III interactions.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto práce bolo pripraviť bentonity modifikované chelatónom III (EDTA). Modifikované bentonity boli pripravené za rôznych podmienok pre zistenie vplyvu koncentrácie a kontaktného času chelatónu III na bentonit. Na výsledných materiáloch bola stanovená katiónová a aniónová výmenná kapacita a materiály boli charakterizované metódou infračervenej spektroskopie. V extraktoch po kontakte bentonitu s chelatónom III boli stanovené obsahy Ca, Mg a Fe. Z hodnôt katiónových a aniónových výmenných kapacít modifikovaných materiálov vyplýva, že oproti prírodnému bentonitu dochádza k nárastu týchto hodnôt pri všetkých použitých koncentráciách roztokov chelatónu. S rastúcou koncentráciou chelatónu potom dochádza k znižovaniu hodnôt výmenných kapacít, čo bolo sledované tiež v závislosti na rastúcom kontaktnom čase. Pri kontakte dochádza pravdepodobne k odstráneniu niektorých nečistôt (minerálov) z bentonitu, čím dochádza k zvýšeniu hodnoty výmenných kapacít. Avšak chelatón čiastočne rozpúšťa oktaedrické siete montmorillonitu a dochádza k zníženiu hodnôt výmenných kapacít s rastúcou koncentráciou chelatónu, čo bolo potvrdené aj infračervenou spektroskopiou a analýzou extraktov. Boli zistené nezrovnalosti medzi výsledkami štúdia koncentrácie a kontaktného času, ktoré boli pravdepodobne spôsobené ďalším vplyvom (napr. miešanie). Štúdium týchto vplyvov by mohlo byť ďalším smerom štúdia interakcií bentonitu s chelatónom III.
