Value priorities and subjective well-being in the consumer society

Abstract:

Výzkum si klade za cíl prověřit vzájemné vztahy mezi subjektivní důležitostí přisuzovanou jednotlivým hodnotám, materialismem, autonomií a osobní pohodou v konzumní společnosti. Výzkumný soubor tvoří 178 osob, z toho 155 studentů z oborů právo (N= 95; 50% žen) a psychologie (N = 60; 52% žen) a 23 členů Hnutí Hare Kršna (39 % žen). K získání dat byly použity následující metody: Portrait value questionnaire, Mental health continuum – short form, Material Value Scale a Self-determination scale. Výzkum dochází k závěru o kladném vztahu mezi materialismem a následujícími hodnotami: moc, úspěch a hédonismus, a naopak o záporném vztahu mezi materialismem a hodnotami: benevolence a universalismus. Pro studenty vyšly tři hodnoty v kladném vztahu s autonomií, a to hédonismus, stimulace a sebeurčení. Čtyři hodnoty se ukázaly být s autonomií v negativním vztahu, a to konformita, tradice, bezpečí a moc, nicméně pro členy Hnutí Hare Kršna se tyto výsledky neukázaly jako statisticky významné. Výzkum se věnuje i rozlišení skupin v míře důležitosti, jakou přisuzují jednotlivým hodnotám a v osobní pohodě. Studenti práv přikládají větší důležitost hodnotám materialismus, moc a úspěch než zbytek souboru. Členové Hnutí Hare Kršna a studenti psychologie se od studentů práv odlišují tím, že přikládají větší důležitost hodnotám benevolence a universalismus. Členové Hnutí Hare Kršna dosahovali vyšší úrovně osobní pohody než studenti, mezi kterými se neprojevily významné rozdíly. Materialismus se pro studenty ukázal být v záporném vztahu s osobní pohodou, nicméně na rozdíl od členů Hnutí Hare Kršna tento vztah nebyl statisticky významný. Vztah mezi autonomií a osobní pohodou se naopak ukázal jako kladný. Výzkum se věnuje i vztahu mezi osobní pohodou a shodou hodnot jedince s hodnotami jeho skupiny, přičemž dochází k závěru, že tento vztah se liší v závislosti na pohlaví. Pro přesnější popis tohoto vztahu je vhodné provést další výzkum.

Abstract:

The purpose of the study is to describe the relationships between priorities in values, materialism, autonomy and subjective well-being. The study sample consists of 178 respondents, 95 of whom study law (50% women), 60 of whom study psychology (51% women) 23 of whom are members of the Hare Krishna movement (39% women). Data was collated using the following methods: the Portrait Value Questionnaire (PVQ), the Mental Health Continuum – short form (MHC-SF), the Material Value Scale (MVS) and the Self - Determination Scale (SDS). The results show that there is a positive relationship between materialism and the following values: power, success and hedonism. However, there is a negative relationship between materialism and following values: benevolence and universalism. In the group of students three values were found which have a positive relationship with autonomy (hedonism, stimulation and self-direction), whereas there were four values with a negative relationship with autonomy (tradition, conformity, security and power). These results are not statistically significant for members of the Hare Krishna movement. The research also compares groups in their priorities in values and in the level of subjective well-being. Students of law place a greater importance on materialism and the values of power and success than the rest of the research group. Members of the Hare Krishna movement and students of psychology differ from students of law by putting greater importance on the values of benevolence and universalism. Members of the Hare Krishna movement obtain higher levels of subjective well-being than students among whom there are not significant differences. In the sample, there is a negative relationship between subjective well-being and materialism. However, the relationship described for the group of students is not statistically significant. The relationship between autonomy and subjective well-being is positive. Research also focuses on the relationship between subjective well-being and the congruence of personal priorities in values and those of the individual´s group (value congruence). In this topic, the research concludes that the relationship differs for genders. Further research is necessary to analyse more deeply the relationship between the congruence in values and subjective well-being.
