The representation of the Second World War in the work of Irene Nemirovsky

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the analysis of the novel Suite francaise by the Jewish author of Ukrainian origin, Irène Némirovsky. The main aim of this thesis is to find out how the author presents the period of the Second World War in her work in comparison with how is this period generally presented throughout the history and at the same with how it is presented in the works of other authors . However, the author herself was a victim of the Holocaust and so unfortunately could not complete her work. Of the original five chapters that were supposed to form the novel, she managed to write only the first two. The thesis, however, takes into consideration her remarks and notes, which are part of the novel, so it is possible to create at least an approximate picture of how would the fates of the protagonists likely unravel. At the same time, these remarks will help clarify whether the work is based on reality or is merely fictional. The second part of the thesis will help clarify her attitude towards the Jews. Although the author is of Jewish origin, in her books she often speaks very negatively about Jews. For this reason, she was labeled anti-semitic. Using the Sketch Engine linguistic corpus and selected keywords related to the issue of Judaism, the text is analyzed in detail to confirm or disprove anti-semitism of the author.

Práce se zabývá analýzou románu Suite francaise, židovské autorky ukrajinského původu Irène Némirovsky. Hlavním cílem práce je zjistit jak autorka prezentuje období Druhé světové války ve svém díle v porovnání s tím jak toto období popisuje historie a zároveň jak je problematika popisována obecně v literatuře jinými autory. Autorka se však sama stala obětí holocaustu a tak své dílo bohužel nemohla dokončit. Z původních 5 kapitol, které měly tvořit román, stihla napsat pouze první dvě. Práce se však opírá o její poznámky, které jsou součástí díla a je možné vytvořit si alespoň přibližný obraz o tom, jak by se skončili osudy hlavních hrdinů, kdyby ho autorka stihla dokončit. Tyto poznámky zároveň pomůžou objasnit zda se dílo opírá o realitu nebo jde pouze o fikci . Druhá část práce pomůže objasnit její postoj vůči Židům. Přestože je autorka židovského původu, ve svých knihách se o Židech častokrát vyjadřuje velmi negativně. Z toho důvodu byla označena za antisemitu. Za pomoci lingvistického korpusu Sketch engine a zvolených klíčových slov, které se týkají problematiky židovství, je provedena analýza textu, díky níž je možné toto tvrzení potvrdit nebo vyvrátit.
