Abstract:

Ačkoliv existuje mnoho neurovědních prací zaměřených na neurální mechanismy zásadní pro sociální kognici, už méně studií se zabývá jejich testováním v podmínkách více odpovídajícím vstupům z okolního komplexního světa. Předkládaná studie se s využitím metody funkční magnetické rezonance (fMRI) zabývá analýzou vlivu dopravně bezpečnostní kampaně na mozkovou aktivitu. Cerebrální aktivita ve vztahu k sociální kognici a empatii byla studována prostřednictvím prezentace klipů z kampaně, které zobrazují tragické následky nebezpečného chování (NZ) a klipů zachycujících naopak bezpečnou jízdu (CS). V první fázi výzkumu jsme u bezproblémových řidičů zjišťovali, které části mozku jsou více aktivovány v průběhu sledování klipů NZ v porovnání s CS. Signifikantně vyšší hemodynamická odpověď byla pozorována bilaterálně v okolí sulcus temporalis superior (STS), zejména v levé hemisféře, během sledování klipů NZ vzhledem k CS. Aktivace těchto mozkových oblastí nevykazovala signifikantní korelaci se subjektivním ohodnocením valence a arousal pro žádnou z prezentovaných kategorií videostimulů, ale byl zaznamenán statisticky významný efekt empatie v pravém STS. Ve druhé části byly porovnávány změny aktivace v oblasti STS mezi řidiči s pro- a anti-sociálními behaviorálními tendencemi. Porovnání s řidiči vykazujícími riskantnější chování odhalilo u bezproblémových řidičů signifikantně výraznější nárůst mozkové aktivity v STS bilaterálně během sledování NZ stimulů. U problémových řidičů je aktivace STS oproti druhé skupině naopak nižší. Tematické kódování verbálních popisů prezentovaných stimulů poukázalo na rozdíly v aktivitě STS v závislosti na získaném skóre řidičů ve dvou indexech socio-kognitivního zpracování; subjekty vnímané následky akcí postav a pozitivní hodnocení klipů. Naše výsledky poukazují na vztah mezi STS regionem a empatií a poskytují důkaz pro vztah mezi rozdílnou aktivací levého STS a rozdílným sociálním chováním. Získaná data mají důležitý význam pro hlubší porozumění funkce STS v procesech odehrávajících se v komplexním sociálním kontextu.

Abstract:

Although there are many neuroscientific studies focused on the neural mechanisms underlying social cognition, fewer studies deal with their testing in conditions more similar to inputs from the surrounding complex world. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the present study analyzes the effect of road safety campaign on brain activity. Cerebral activities related to processing of social cognition and empathy were studied via projection of clips from the campaign, which show tragic consequences of unsafe behavior (NZ) and clips depicting, on the contrary, safe driving (CS). In the first phase of research, we have been investigating which parts of the brain were more activated during watching NZ clips in comparison to CS in smooth drivers. Significantly greater hemodynamic response was observed bilaterally around the superior temporal sulcus (STS), especially in the left hemisphere during watching NZ clips relative to CS. The activation of these brain areas did not show significant correlation with the subjective evaluation of valence and arousal for either category of presented video stimuli, however, the statistically significant effect of empathy within right STS was found. In the second work, the changes in the activation of the STS were compared among drivers with pro- and anti - social behavioral tendencies. The comparison with the drivers exhibiting riskier behavior revealed a significant increase in brain activity in this area during the watching NZ stimuli in safe drivers. On the contrary, this STS activity is lower in problem drivers compared to the first group. Thematic coding of verbal descriptions of the presented stimuli showed differences in the STS activity in dependence on the drivers’ obtained score in two indices of socio-cognitive processing; subjects’ perceived consequences of characters’ actions, and a positive evaluation of the clips. Our results demonstrate the relationship between the STS region and empathy and provide the evidence for a connection between the different activation of the left STS and differences in social behavior. The obtained data have important implications for a deeper understanding of the function of the STS in the processes taking place in a complex social context.
