Tetrapod ichnodiversity from the early Permian of the Boskovice Basin (Moravia, Czech Republic)

Abstract:

Boskovická brázda je významná kontinentální pánev vyplněná nepřetržitým sledem sedimentů nejsvrchnějšího karbonu až spodního permu, jež obsahuje bohatý fosilní materiál. Po více než 100 letech výzkumů je boskovická brázda známá především nálezy permských paprskoploutvých ryb a čtvernožců řazeným k diskosauriscidním seymouriamorfům. Tělesné pozůstatky jiných čtvernožců jsou zde poměrně vzácné. Nedávný ichnologický výzkum permských uloženin však odhalil překvapivě vysokou diverzitu suchozemských obratlovců včetně prvních dokladů permských blanatých v této pánvi. Poprvé byly podrobně popsány ichnotaxony Amphisauropus kablikae, Batrachichnus salamandroides, Dimetropus leisnerianus, Dromopus lacertoides, Ichniotherium cottae, Ichniotherium sphaerodactylum a Limnopus heterodactylus dokládající přítomnost drobných i velkých temnospondylů, velkých suchozemských forem seymouriamorfů, diadektomorfů, raných synapsidů a sauropsidů. Mnohé popsané exempláře disponují vysokou mírou zachování a patří mezi nejlépe zachované stopy svého druhu na světě. Stopy ichnotaxonu Ichniotherium cottae dále vykazují jedinečný vzor trasy související s evolučními změnami lokomoce diadektomorfů. Předložený výzkum tak zásadně obohatil naše dosavadní představy o diverzitě a vývoji čtvernožců žijících v raně permských ekosystémech mezihorského údolí rovníkové Pangey, jakou představovala boskovická brázda.

Abstract:

The Boskovice Basin is an important continental basin filled with a continuous sequence of the uppermost Carboniferous–lower Permian deposits and containing a rich fossil record. After more than 100 years of research, the Boskovice Basin is known primarily for the discoveries of Permian Actinopterygii and tetrapods attributed to discosauriscid seymouriamorphs. Body fossils of other tetrapods are relatively rare there. However, recent ichnological field research in the Permian strata revealed a surprisingly high diversity of terrestrial vertebrates, including the first evidence of Permian amniotes in this basin. For the first time, the ichnospecies Amphisauropus kablikae, Batrachichnus salamandroides, Dimetropus leisnerianus, Dromopus lacertoides, Ichniotherium cottae, Ichniotherium sphaerodactylum, and Limnopus heterodactylus have been described in detail, demonstrating the presence of small and large temnospondyls, large terrestrial seymouriamorphs, diadectomorphs, early synapsids, and sauropsids. Many of the described specimens show a high degree of preservation and are among the best-preserved specimens of their ichnotaxa worldwide. Furthermore, the tracks of Ichniotherium cottae show a unique trackway pattern related to evolutionary changes in diadectomorph locomotion. The presented research thus fundamentally enriched our existing ideas on the diversity and evolutionary traits of tetrapods living in the early Permian ecosystems of the inter-mountain valley of equatorial Pangea, such as the Boskovice Basin.
