Modelling of environmental distrubution of persistent pollutants

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá několika odlišnými modelovacími přístupy distribuce perzistentních polutantů v životním prostředí a jejich aplikací na reálná data, získaná v průběhu různých projektů v Centru RECETOX a několika dalších státních institucí mimo Masarykovu Univerzitu. Jednotlivé modelovací přístupy na sebe navazují a tvoří tak sekvenci směřující k propojení laboratorních experimentů, polních studií a modelů, založených na deterministickém a stochastickém přístupu. V rámci první studie byl vytvořen deterministický, boxový model, obsahující jako kompartmenty vzduch, vegetaci a půdu. Cílem jeho aplikace bylo pokusit se vysvětlit pozorované 10 leté trendy vývoje koncentrací PAHs v půdě v areálu observatoře ČHMÚ Košetice. Výsledky modelu ukazují, že pozorovaný trend je výsledkem změn atmosférických koncentrací, která se udály již na začátku 90 let, tedy před začátkem pravidelného monitorování obsahu PAHs v atmosféře. Druhá studie je příkladem aplikace modelu založeném na stochastickém přístupu na regionální úrovni. Cílem byla predikce plošného rozložení koncentrací vybraných POPs v půdě na území České republiky. Pro její účely bylo shromážděno značné množství dat z monitoringu z různých institucí. Poté byla databáze vyčištěna, zpracována a popsána základní statistikou. V dalším průběhu byly pomocí neparametrické regresní techniky (rozhodovací stromy typu CART), predikovány koncentrace POPs v půdě na území České republiky v rozlišení 1x1 km. V závěrečné fázi práce byly použity geografické informační systémy (GIS), především pro vizualizaci výsledků ve formě map. Další studie byla v podstatě laboratorním experimentem, jehož cílem bylo měřit vytěkávací toky POPs v kontrolovaných laboratorních podmínkách, z různých typů půd. Na dno vytěkávací komory byly postupně nasypány různé vzorky půdy, lišící se obsahem POPs. Pomocí čerpadla byl za různých teplot komorou proháněn předčištěný vzduch a na výstupu byl filtrován. Rychlost proudění vzduchu simulovala různé rychlosti vzduchu. Výsledkem experimentu byla sada grafů, znázorňujících závislosti vytěkávacích toků na koncentraci a teplotě. V další fázi byl použit matematický model k výpočtu teoretických vytěkávacích toků, které byly porovnány s měřenými hodnotami. Výsledkem bylo zjištění, že model se liší od reality pro málo těkavé POPs a pro vzorky s vyšší koncentrací. Tedy pro podmínky, které mají tendenci vzdalovat se od ideálního stavu, který je podmínkou fungování fugacitních modelů. V poslední (dosud nepublikované) studii byly oba modelovací přístupy, tedy deterministický a stochastický, propojeny. Cílem studie bylo odhadnout vytěkávací toky POPs na území ČR. K tomuto účelu je nutné znát rozložení koncentrací POPs na území ČR v dostatečném rozlišení a model, který dokáže vytěkávací toky předpovědět. Tyto informace byly získány v předchozích studiích. Pomocí podkladových vrstev koncentrací POPs v půdě (z GIS), je možné vytěkávací toky odvodit pro různé teploty a obsahy organického uhlíku. Výsledkem modelu jsou animace, ukazující změny vytěkávacích toku na ploše v ČR v rozlišení 1x1 km. Získané informace umožňují zjistit, na kterém území je nejvyšší potenciál k ukládání POPs v důsledku studené kondenzace. Taky je možné identifikovat místa, kde se nachází zásoby POPs s nejvyšším mobilizačním potenciálem, například v důsledku klimatických změn. V rámci disertační práce byla tedy demonstrována reálná možnost aplikace distribučních modelů v kombinaci s analýzou velkých souborů dat a laboratorním experimentem. Abstract:

The thesis deals with several different approaches to modelling the distribution of persistent organic pollutants in the environment and their application to real data obtained from various projects in the Centre RECETOX and several other state institutions outside the Masaryk University. The various modelling approaches are logically connected to form a sequence designed to link the laboratory experiments, field studies and models based on deterministic and stochastic approach. In the first study, deterministic, box model containing compartments such as air, soil and vegetation, was made. The purpose of his application was to try to explain the observed 10-year trends in PAHs concentrations in soils at the Hydrometeorological Institute Observatory Košetice. The main result of this study was that the observed trend is the result of changes in atmospheric concentrations, which occurred at the beginning of 1990 years, it means prior to the start of the regular monitoring of the PAHs in the atmosphere. The second study represents an example of an model based on stochastic approach application. The prediction of spatial distribution of concentrations of selected POPs in soils in the Czech Republic, was the main goal of this study. For these purposes, the huge amount of data from monitoring of the various institutions, were collected. The obtained database was cleaned, processed and reported by basic statistics. During the next step the so-called regression trees, which were the result of its analysis, predicted concentrations of POPs in soils in the Czech Republic at a resolution of 1x1 km, were prepared. In the final phase of work, the geographic information systems (GIS), particularly for visualization of results in the form of maps, were used. A laboratory experiment focused on the measurements of the POPs volatilization flows under controlled laboratory conditions from different soil types, were performed. At the bottom of volatilization chamber, 4 different soil samples with different contents of POPs, were tested. Precleaned air chamber was pumped through the chamber under 4 different temperatures and the output has been filtered. Air velocity simulated different wind speeds. A set of graphs showing the volatilization, depending on the concentration, flow and temperature was the result of these experiment. At the end, a mathematical model to calculate the volatilization of theoretical courses, which were compared with measured values, was used The model results were different from the measurements for low-volatile POPs and for samples with higher concentrations. Thus, for conditions that tend to move away from the ideal state, which is a Essentials condition for functioning of the fugacity models. In recent (until now unpublished) study, both modelling approaches, namely deterministic and stochastic, were connected. The estimation of the POPs volatilization flows in the Czech Republic, was the main goal of this study. For this purpose, it was necessary to know the distribution of concentrations of POPs in the country with sufficient resolution and a to develop model that can predict the volatilization flows. This information has been obtained in previous studies. The determination of the volatilization flows for different temperature and organic carbon was given using the GIS layers of soil concentrations of POPs. The animations which were produced as a final study output, showed the changes of volatilization flux in the area of the CR with resolution 1x1 km. The territory with the highest potential for storage of POPs due to the cold condensation were obtained. Storage sites with the highest POPs mobilization potential, for example due to climate change, were also identified. The possibility of the distribution models application in combination with the analysis of large data sets and laboratory experiments, was demonstrated in this Thesis.
