Connection between the level of communication apprehension, self-efficacy, flow, self-handicapping and academic success among students of teaching

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the factors that have an impact on the academic success of the students preparing for the teaching profession. The primary objective is to explore the existence of a relationship between the students’ communication apprehension, self-efficacy, flow, self-handicapping, and academic success. It also investigates the extent to which communication apprehension differs between the students of lower years (first and second year of the Bachelor’s degree) and the students of upper years (third year of the Bachelor’s degree, first and second year of the Master’s degree). The secondary objective is to discover the students’ strategies used to overcome the communication apprehension. The survey is established on the basis of questionnaires answered by fifty-one suitable respondents. The questionnaires used in the survey are PRCA 24 FSS 2, CASES, Škála sebahendikepovania, and a demographic questionnaire. The results of the questionnaires do not show a significant statistical relationship between the investigated factors. Likewise, they do not show statistically significant differences between the students of lower years and the students of upper years regarding their communication apprehension. The survey respondents use various strategies to overcome their communication apprehension. Using the open coding method, the respondents’ individual strategies are divided into eight categories.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá faktormi, ktoré ovplyvňujú akademickú úspešnosť u študentov, pripravujúcich sa na učiteľské povolanie. Hlavným cieľom je zistiť existenciu vzťahu medzi komunikačným ostychom, self-efficacy, flow, sebahendikepovaním a akademickou úspešnosťou. V tejto práci je zisťovaná aj existencia rozdielu v miere komunikačného ostychu medzi nižšími (1. a 2. ročník bakalárskeho štúdia) a vyššími ročníkmi (3. ročník bakalárskeho štúdia., 1. a 2. ročník nadväzujúceho magisterského štúdia). Sekundárnym cieľom je zistiť aké stratégie využívajú respondenti na zníženie/zmiernenie komunikačného ostychu. Výskumu sa zúčastnilo 51 respondentov a pomocou dotazníkov bola zisťovaná úroveň jednotlivých premenných. V rámci štúdie boli použité dotazníky PRCA – 24, FSS – 2, CASES, Škála sebahendikepovania a demografický dotazník. Výsledky nepreukázali významný štatistický vzťah medzi skúmanými faktormi. Ako štatisticky významný sa nepreukázal ani rozdiel v miere komunikačného ostychu medzi nižšími a vyššími ročníkmi. Respondenti využívali rôzne stratégie na to, aby znížili/prekonali svoj komunikačný ostych. Pomocou otvoreného kódovania boli jednotlivé stratégie zaradené do ôsmich kategórií.
