The Lear case: Questions of authorship in the perception of a theatrical performance

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá otázkou autorství v divadelní inscenaci a představení. Autorka při zkoumání vychází z debaty o inscenaci Krále Leara uvedené v roce 2011 v historické budově Národního divadla v režii Jana Nebeského. Diskuze, již autorka analyzuje, obsahovala profesionální divadelní recenze, ale také komentáře široké veřejnosti na diskuzních fórech. Za pomoci současné české i zahraniční divadelní a literární teorie se pokouší zodpovědět otázku, jaké typy autorství v divadle existují a nakolik ovlivňují diváckou recepci. Nejprve se zaměřuje na autorství dramatika a režiséra a jejich metaforický souboj o vliv nad diváckým vnímáním. Dále se zabývá autorstvím, jež zaštiťuje divadlo jako produkční jednotka. V poslední kapitole otevírá téma diváka jako posledního relevantního autora divadelního představení. Divák svou přítomností umožňuje vznik představení, ale zároveň dílo interpretuje, což ho staví do nejvýznamnější pozice v celém procesu recepce. Práce nastiňuje, že vnímání je ovlivněno více očekáváními, s nimiž diváci do divadla přicházejí, než samotným představením.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the question of authorship in theatre production and performance. The author's research is based on the debate about the production of King Lear staged in 2011 in the historic building of the National Theatre and directed by Jan Nebeský. The debate that the author analyses included professional theatre reviews as well as comments from the public on online forums. Using contemporary Czech and foreign theatre and literary theory, she attempts to answer the question of what types of authorship exist in theatre and how they influence audience perception. First, she focuses on the authorship of the playwright and the director and their metaphorical fight for influence over the audience's perception. Next, she explores the authorship of the theatre as a production company. In the last chapter, she opens up the topic of the spectator as the last relevant author of a theatrical performance. The spectator's presence makes the theatrical performance possible. At the same time, the spectator interprets the work, which puts him in the most important position in the whole process of perception. The thesis suggests that perception is influenced more by the expectations with which spectators come to the theatre than by the performance itself.
