"Tell me what you read, and I will tell you who you are" (A Critical Discourse Analysis of British Web-news Headlines)

Abstract:

The thesis draws on Fairclough?s approach to critical discourse analysis (CDA). It is based on a comparison of web-news headlines on the issue of immigration published in two British quality newspapers during the year 2010. Since both papers are claimed to support distinct political ideas, the ideational as well as the interpersonal function of language are examined to uncover the linguistic means each newspaper uses to foreground its viewpoint on the issue, and therefore either contribute to or oppose unfair power relations in its discourse. The thesis also focuses on various discourse participants and their relations as it attempts to classify not only the powerful participants, thus different elites, but also the powerless participants, more precisely immigrants into the us and them group members. Last but not least it comments on the ways each paper uses to create the image of immigrants in its discourse as it might not only indicate and also influence immigrants? position within British society, but it can also affect the readers? perception of reality and their understanding of the issue. The thesis concludes with the evidence that no discourse can be considered as ?objective? since the presentation of reality is always influenced by the ideological background of a certain speaker.

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce vychází z Faircloughovy koncepce kritické analýzy diskurzu (KAD). Je založena na srovnání online titulků pojednávajících o tématu imigrace publikovaných ve dvou britských seriózních denících během roku 2010. Přestože oba deníky patří mezi kvalitní tisk, odlišuje je od sebe fakt, že jsou považovány za zastánce rozdílných politických názorů. Práce se tudíž zabývá analýzou ideační a interpersonální funkce jazyka, aby odhalila jazykové prostředky, které konkrétní deník používá k prezentaci vlastního pohledu na otázku imigrace a tím buď podporuje nerovné vztahy moci, nebo jim oponuje. Práce se také soustřeďuje na různé účastníky diskurzu a jejich vztahy, neboť se pokouší klasifikovat jak účastníky mající moc, tedy různé elity, tak účastníky s malou nebo žádnou mocí, tedy imigranty, jako členy skupin my nebo oni. Poslední ovšem neméně důležitou součástí práce jsou způsoby, které oba deníky používají pro znázornění imigrantů ve svém diskurzu, neboť tento obraz může nejen naznačit a také ovlivnit postavení imigrantů v britské společnosti, ale může mít také vliv na čtenářovo vnímání reality a následné porozumění otázce imigrace. Práce poukazuje na skutečnost, že žádný diskurz nemůže být považován za ?objektivní?, neboť prezentace reality je vždy ovlivněna ideologickým pozadím toho či onoho mluvčího.
