Urnfield- and Hallstatt period in Central Slovakia

Abstract:

The aim of submitted paper is to describe the development of the settlement in the Urnfield and Hallstatt Period in central area of Central Slovakia in the context of mining, metallurgy and distribution of copper ore. Because of unsatisfactory state of the art of mining archaeology and archaeometallurgy is the paper focused on the mining region of Špania Dolina–Piesky. The basis of the work is the typological and chronological evaluation of pottery and metal finds from individual settlements, burial grounds and hoards. Gathered data were compared with the results of archaeometallurgical analyses. From the development of archaeological cultures point of view the work follows the development of two cultures: Piliny and Lusatian Culture. The work shows the reader the state of the art in other mining regions of Central Europe with evidences of mining in the Bronze Age. It looks closely at the opinions on the copper mining in the area of Western Carpathians. It also focuses on the deposits and possibilities of mining in the mining region of Špania Dolina (Špania Dolina–Piesky), as well as the results of chemical analyses of artefacts from the Eneolithic and Early Bronze Age. The problems of mining and distribution of bronze raw material, considering the missing direct evidences of mining, is processed on the basis of chemical (ICP-OES and ICP-MS) and lead isotope analyses of bronze artefacts of the above mentioned cultures.

Abstract:

Dizertačná práca si kladie za cieľ postihnúť vývoj osídlenia v období popolnicových polí a dobe halštatskej v centrálnej časti stredného Slovenska v kontexte problematiky ťažby, metalurgie a distribúcie medenej suroviny v stredoslovenskej banskej oblasti. Z dôvodu nedostatočného stavu bádania v obore montánnej archeológie ako i archeometalurgie je práca detailnejšie zameraná na špaňodolinský banský revír. Základ práce tvorí typologicko-chronologické vyhodnotenie keramického a kovového materiálu z jednotlivých sídlisk, pohrebísk a depotov. Získané údaje sme porovnali s výsledkami archeometalurgických analýz. Z hľadiska vývoja archeologických kultúr práca sleduje v oblasti vývoj dvoch kultúr: pilinskej a lužickej. Práca zoznamuje čitateľa so stavom bádania v ďalších banských regiónoch strednej Európy s dokladmi ťažby v dobe bronzovej. Podrobnejšie sa zameriava na názory ťažby medi na území Západných Karpát. Pozornosť je tiež venovaná ložiskovým pomerom a možnostiam ťažby v špaňodolinskom rudnom revíre, ako aj výsledkom chemických analýz artefaktov z eneolitu a staršej doby bronzovej. Problematika ťažby a distribúcie medenej suroviny vzhľadom na chýbajúce priame doklady ťažby je riešená na základe chemických (ICP-OES a ICP-MS) a izotopových analýz bronzových artefaktov pilinskej kultúry.
