Allies or competitors? A comparative study of selected ideas of Iosif of Volokolamsk (1439-1515) and Nilus of Sora (1433-1508) on the basis of Troeltsch’s typology of religious groups

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá komparací vybraných myšlenek dvou reformátorů pravoslavné církve, Iosifa Volockého a Nila Sorského, kteří se pokoušeli prostřednictvím reformy mnišství navrátit církev do stavu, který chápali jako její prvotní ideál. Úvodní část práce se věnuje historickému kontextu, nezbytnému pro samotnou komparaci, v další části jsou analyzovány vybrané myšlenky týkající se inspiračních zdrojů obou reformátorů, jejich vztahu k okolnímu prostředí a světské moci, principu fungování jimi založených klášterů (resp. skitu), funkce, kterou měly plnit ve společnosti, a trestů, které navrhovali pro potrestání heretiků. Práce vychází z předpokladu, že mezi skupinou a okolím, které ji obklopuje, existuje jistá míra napětí. Tento předpoklad navazuje na teorii Ernsta Troeltsche, podle níž se náboženské skupiny pohybují na kontinuu od úplného odmítnutí světa až po jeho přijetí. V jeho chápání vykazují skupiny blížící se pólu církve vyšší akceptaci sociálního prostředí, skupiny blížící se pólu sekty vykazují naopak míru akceptace nižší. Celé porovnání, založené na interpretaci vybraných pramenů, kterými jsou v případě Nila Sorského Ustav a Predanie, u Iosifa Volockého pak Ustav a Prosvetitel, je formulováno z teoretické pozice typologie náboženských skupin formulovaných Ernestem Troeltschem v podobě ideálních typů „církev“, „sekta“ a „mystik“, které jsou ideálními typy ve weberovském smyslu. Práce si klade za cíl prokázat, že myšlenky Iosifa Volockého a Nila Sorského jsou sice rozdílné, ale nikoli protikladné ve smyslu přináležitosti k odlišným troeltschovským typům náboženské skupiny.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the comparison of selected ideas of two reformers of the Russian Orthodox church, Iosif of Volokolamsk and Nilus of Sora, who tried to restore the Church through the reform of monasticism to the state they understood as her prime ideal. The first part deals with the historical context which is necessary for the comparison itself. The second part contains an analysis of selected ideas from the literary works by Nilus of Sora (Predanie and Ustav) and by Iosif of Volokolamsk (Ustav and Prosvetitel) relating to sources of inspiration, affinity to the world and secular power, the principle of function of their monastery (and scete), functions such religious houses were supposed to fulfil in society, and the punishment of heretics. The thesis is based on the assumption that there is a certain degree of tension between the group and its surroundings following the theory of Ernst Troeltsch, according to which religious groups move on the continuum from total rejection of the world to its acceptance, where the groups approaching the pole of Church show considerable acceptance of the social environment, groups approaching the pole of the sect, on the contrary, show less acceptance. The aim of the thesis is to prove that the thoughts of Iosif of Volokolamsk and Nilus of Sora are different but not contradictory in the sense of Troeltschian types of religious groups. The entire comparison, based on the interpretation of selected sources mentioned above, is formulated from the theoretical perspective of the typology of religious groups formulated by Ernest Troeltsch in the form of an ideal types such as “church”, “sect” and “mysticism” in Weber´s sense.
