Abstract:

Cílem každého sběru dat je získat data, která jsou validní. V kontextu mé disertace to znamená vhodně provést sběr temporálních dat u unikátních událostí a také vědět, do jaké míry je možné těmto datům věřit. Mým prvním cílem je explorovat možnosti jak je možné zvýšit přesnost datace. Přesněji, studie II a III ověřuje vliv kalendária (calendar instrument) na přesnost datace jedinečných osobních a veřejných událostí. Kalendárium je technikou sběru dat založenou na obyčejném kalendáři, který je za účelem zvýšení přesnosti datace vylepšený o další nápovědi facilitující vybavování. Ačkoliv jde o populární techniku, stále chybí dostatek informací o tom, za jakých podmínek kalendář opravdu zvyšuje přesnost datace a zdali existují lidé či typy událostí, pro které kalendárium není vhodné. Druhým cílem bylo explorovat zdroje (prediktory) přesnosti datace u osobních a veřejných událostí. Práce je zaměřena na tři zdroje: prediktory související s individuálními charakteristikami respondentů (charakteristiky respondentů); prediktory související s událostmi, které budou datovány (charakteristiky událostí); a prediktory související se sběrem dat (tento prediktor byl experimentálně manipulován).

Abstract:

The overarching goal of any scientific data collection is to acquire valid information. In the context of my dissertation this means collecting the temporal data of unique events properly but at the same time having insight into how much confidence we can have in these data that are often found to be biased. My first aim was thus an exploration of the possibilities how to improve the accuracy of date estimates. More concretely in Studies II and III I evaluated the impact of a calendar instrument on dating accuracy of unique personal and public events. Calendar instrument is a data collection technique based on the common calendar that incorporates various recall aids into one instrument and should thus help to increase the dating accuracy. However, there is not too much evidence about the conditions under which the calendar instrument increases dating accuracy and if there are people or types of events when the calendar instrument is not suitable. The second aim was to explore the sources (predictors) of dating accuracy among personal and public events. I focused on three sources: predictors related to individual differences of respondents (respondent characteristics); predictors related to the target events that were dated (event characteristics); and on predictors related to the data collection (this predictor was experimentally manipulated).
