Species diversification of African frogs in spatial and ecological context

Abstract:

Biodiverzita tropických lesů ve střední Africe je stále nedostatečně studována. Evoluční historie organismů v této oblasti byla ovlivněna rozšiřováním a zmenšováním plochy lesů v důsledku klimatických změn a geografickými bariérami, jako jsou řeky a pohoří. Ve své dizertaci jsem se zabýval fylogeografií afroskokanů z rodu Phrynobatrachus. Tento rod stále obsahuje mnoho druhových komplexů s neznámou kryptickou diverzitou. Kamerunské hory jsou důležitou oblastí pro diverzifikaci afroskokanů. Studoval jsem „kamerunskou radiaci“ afroskokanů, což je skupina obsahující převážně horské, ale také některé nížinné druhy. Molekulární data odhalila existenci nové linie se dvěma novými druhy, Phrynobatrachus arcanus a P. mbabo. Studium komplexu Phrynobatrachus steindachneri odhalilo retikulární evoluci (hybridizaci) způsobenou konektivitou horských lesů během glaciálů v pozdním pleistocénu. Jedna linie byla popsána jako nový druh, P. amieti. Poslední studie byla zaměřena na druhový komplex z nížinných deštných pralesů, Phrynobatrachus auritus. Objevil jsem vysoký počet geograficky omezených mitochondriálních linií, které pravděpodobně korespondují s lokací historických lesních refugií. Genomická SNP data podporují mitochondriální strukturu pouze částečně a bylo nalezeno 5 hlavních skupin, které lze považovat za samostatné druhy. Taxonomie tohoto druhového komplexu vyžaduje další detailní zhodnocení a bude předmětem budoucích výstupů.

Abstract:

The biodiversity of tropical forests in Central Africa remains poorly studied. The evolutionary history of organisms in this region was influenced by expansion and shrinkage of forests due to climate change and geographical barriers, such as rivers and mountain ranges. In my dissertation, I studied phylogeography of puddle frogs from the genus Phrynobatrachus. This genus still contains many species complexes with unknown cryptic diversity. The Cameroon Volcanic Line is an important montane region for puddle frog diversification. I studied the “Cameroon radiation,” of Phrynobatrachus, which is a clade containing mainly montane but also some lowland species. Molecular data revealed the existence of a new lineage with two new species, Phrynobatrachus arcanus and P. mbabo. A study of the Phrynobatrachus steindachneri species complex revealed reticulate evolution (hybridization) as a result of cyclic (dis)connectivity of montane forests during glacial/interglacial periods in the Late Pleistocene. One lineage was described as a new species, P. amieti. The last study was focused on a lowland rain forest species complex, Phrynobatrachus auritus. I detected a high number of geographically restricted mitochondrial lineages, which probably correspond to the location of historical forest refugia. The genome-wide SNP data only partly support the mitochondrial structure and 5 main gene pools (populations) are supported. The taxonomy of this species complex requires further detailed evaluation and will be the subject of future studies.
