New Media and Narrative in contemporary Cinematography

Abstract:

Diplomová práce Nová média a píbh v souasné kinematografii zkoumá vliv nových médií a digitálních technologií na filmovou narativitu. Práce je rozdlena na teoretickou ást a rozbor ty vybraných film. První ást se zabývá filmem jako systémem znak a kód, strun popisuje kinematografii pelomu dvacátého a jednadvacátého století a vnuje se i technologiím, které mají na podobu souasného filmu (jeho výrobu, distribuci a konzumaci) zásadní vliv. Samostatnou kapitolu tvoí také text vnovaný narativit ve filmu. Poslední kapitola teoretické ásti práce je vnována nkterým charakteristikám souasné kinematografie (jako jsou hyperrealita, montáž, spektákl a další). V následující analýze vybraných snímk byly rozebírány filmy Moulin Rouge, Vný svit neposkvrnné mysli, Svt zítka a Vesnice. Jsou v rámci souasné filmové tvorby uritým zpsobem signifikantní a zárove nám pomohou dobe pochopit zmny, ke kterým pod vlivem nových médií u souasné filmové narace došlo. Z teoretické i analytické ásti diplomové práce vyplynulo, že i pes znanou orientaci souasné kinematografie na vizualitu a asté použití digitálních efekt, obrací se dnešní film opt ke klasickému píbhu. Efekty pestávají být to hlavní, vítzí píbh. Další závrenou tezí této práce je konstatování, že film jako samostatná a oddlená ást kultury už v souasné dob neobstojí. Produkce audiovizuální zábavy se v souasnosti slévá v jednu oblast s nejrznjšími mediálními formami a možností pro oznaení této produkce je více (nabízí se napíklad pojem audiovizuální kultura). Nový termín je v každém pípad teba hledat.

Abstract:

Summary The final thesis New Media And Narrative In Contemporary Cinematography is focused on the influence of new media on a current film narration. The main issues are following: Has the film narrative changed under the influence of new media? Have those changes enriched the story-telling and therefore spectators or has the image and the spectacle in the foreground and the classical narrative vanished from the present film? Does the currenct cinematography still keep a specific part of our culture or does it need to be placed into wider audio-visul context? The thesis can be devided into the two main parts the theoretical and the analytical. In the first one, film is shortly described as a system of signs and codes (but this final thesis is not the semiotics of the film, the authoress only follow up with this theory, alike with the discourses of the new media and visual culture, which have already been determined). The theoretical part of the thesis also briefly talks about contemporary cinematography (mainly the American one, which sets the main trends in current cinematography), present technologies, which deeply influence form, production, distribution and as well as current film consumption. One part of the theoretical section highlights film narrative past common trends and new methods of story-telling we can see today. The work also outlines some important characteristic of contemporary film, such as hyperreality, montage, combination of the genres, styles and forms, spectacle, the return to the pre-cinemathic era, the waning of the narrative and the surface play-effect. The second part contains the analysis of four films. These pictures (Moulin Rouge, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow and The Village) exhibit some of the fundamental characteristics of contemporary cinematography and transformations that took place under the influence of the new digital technologies. To conclude we can claim, that in spite of numerous digital effect, frequent use of the new media forms, complicated narrative structures and the important role of the image, the narrative in the contamporary cinematography constantly persist. Current film makers return to the classical narrative, which contrives the spectator to immerse to the story. It is also important to state, that contemporary cinematography is no longer a single part of todays postmodern culture. New media and technologies, digitalisation in particular, influenced current film to an extent, that we should denominate current cinematography as a part of the audio-visual culture.
