American Gods as a (Post)modern Myth

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce s názvem Američtí bohové jako (post)moderní mýtus se zabývá mytologickým kontextem románu Američtí bohové od Neila Gaimana poprvé publikovaným v roce 2001. Práce je rozdělena do tří hlavních kapitol. První kapitola seznámí čtenáře jednak s historií a kontextem autorovy práce a jednak s jeho přístupem k víře a mytologii obecně. Druhá kapitola se zaměřuje na detaily románu, tedy struktura lišící se v jednotlivých vydáních, popis samotného děje a nakonec i na ostatní autorova díla spojená s Americkými bohy. Ve třetí kapitole je vyjasněn mytologický základ jednotlivých postav a událostí popisovaných v románu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis entitled American Gods as (Post)modern Myth deals with the mythological context of the novel American Gods by Neil Gaiman first published in 2001. The thesis is divided into three main parts. The first part introduces to the reader the history and context of the author's work as well as his approach to faith and mythology in general. The second chapter focuses on the novel's structure, different editions published, and plot, as well as the author's other works connected to American Gods. The third chapter clarifies the mythological basis of the individual characters described in the novel.
