The problems of weak statehood – a case study of the Venezuela

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem bakalářské práce je aplikovat index zhroucených států na stát Venezuela, zhodnotit tedy jednotlivé indikátory a určit, zda se tento stát řadí mezi zhroucené státy. První část je zaměřena na základní pojmy související s problematikou slabé státnosti, také je popsán index zhroucených států a jeho indikátory, a nakonec je stručně probrána historie Venezuely. V praktické části jsou aplikovány jednotlivé indikátory FSI na současnou situaci ve Venezuele. U každého indikátoru jsou vybrány faktory, které jsou pro tento stát problémem a zhoršují tak dosavadní situaci. Také je u jednotlivých indikátorů uveden graf s výsledným skórem za roky 2006 až 2021, který názorně prezentuje vývoj situace v dané oblasti. Praktická část je ukončena shrnutím nejdůležitějších faktorů, které mají největší vliv na současnou situaci ve Venezuele. Nakonec je zhodnoceno, zda tento stát můžeme řadit mezi zhroucené státy a jak velkou hrozbu představuje pro mezinárodní bezpečnost.

Abstract:

The main purpose of this Bachelor thesis is to apply the fragile states index to Venezuela, evaluate the individual indicators and determine whether the country ranks among the failed states. The first part is focused on the main points related to the issue of weak statehood and on describing the index of failed states and its indicators. To conclude the first part, there is a brief overview of the history of Venezuela. In the practical part, the FSI indicators are applied to the current situation in Venezuela. For each indicator, there are factors identified as problematic, making the current state of the country worse. For each indicator, there is also a chart with annual scores, where I evaluate how the situation developed in specific areas. To conclude the practical part, there is a summary of the most important factors with the highest impact on the current situation in Venezuela. The last part is an evaluation of whether this state can be included among the failed states.
