Majority Through the Eyes of Roma Group: The effect of Social Norms in the Relationship Between Intergroup Contact and Attitudes

Abstract:

V této studii jsme se zabývali souvislostmi mezi meziskupinovým kontaktem Romů a Neromů, meziskupinovými postoji a sociálními normami z dosud chybějící perspektivy jedné z nejvíce stigmatizovaných menšin v Evropě, Romů (N = 226). Zkoumali jsme vztah mezi vnímaným meziskupinovým kontaktem (tzv. deskriptivní normou) a postoji Romů vůči Neromům. Ve snaze vysvětlit psychologické procesy v pozadí vztahu mezi deskriptivními normami a postoji jsme v roli mediačních mechanismů zapojili vnímaná očekávání ohledně kontaktu mezi Romy a Neromy, tzv. injuktivní sociální normy, a to jak ze strany ingroup (tj. Romů), tak i outgroup (tj. Neromů). Ve výzkumu jsme detailně rozlišili normativní vliv na obecné úrovni (tj. co Romové a Neromové očekávají od Romů obecně) a normativní vliv na úrovni jednotlivce (tj. co Romové a Neromové očekávají od konkrétní/ho respondenta/respondentky). Výsledky ukázaly, že sociální normy ingroup (jak deskriptivní, tak injunktivní normy Romů na obecné úrovni) signifikantně predikovaly postoje Romů vůči Neromům, při zohlednění vlivu přímého kontaktu Romů s Neromy. Zároveň jsme zjistli mediační vliv ingroup injunktivních norem na obecné úrovni (tj., co Romové obecně očekávají od Romů ve vztahu k Neromům) ve vztahu mezi ingroup i outgroup deskriptivními normami (tj. vnímaným kontaktem Romů a Neromů) a postoji Romů vůči Neromům. Naopak vnímaná očekávání ze strany Neromů (tj. outgroup normy) neměla na vztah mezi deskriptivními normami a postoji Romů vůči Neromům vliv. Výsledky diskutujeme s ohledem na možnosti zlepšení dlouhodobě problematických vztahů mezi Romy a Neromy v České republice i v zahraničí.

Abstract:

In this study, we investigated the associations among intergroup contact between the Roma and non-Roma, intergroup attitudes, and social norms from the missing perspective of one of the most stigmatized minorities in Europe, the Roma (N = 226). We examined the link between perceived intergroup contact (i.e., descriptive norms) and attitudes of the Roma towards non-Roma. In order to address psychological processes behind the relationship between descriptive norms and attitudes, we involved perceived expectations about contact between the Roma and non-Roma (i.e., injunctive norms), endorsed by both the ingroup (the Roma) and outgroup (the non-Roma) in the role of mediators. In this research, we distinguished the normative influence on a general level (what the Roma and non-Roma expect from the Roma in general) and normative influence on an individual level (what the Roma and non-Roma expect from the particular respondent). The results showed that ingroup social norms (both descriptive and injuctive norms on a general level) significantly predicted attitudes of the Roma toward the non-Roma, over and above the effect of direct intergroup contact. Ingroup injunctive norms on a general level (what the Roma generally expect from the Roma in relation to non-Roma) mediated the rela-tionship between ingroup and outgroup descriptive norms (perceived contact between the Roma and non-Roma) and attitudes. In contrast, the perceived expectations from the non-Roma (i.e., outgroup injunctive norms) did not mediate the link between descriptive norms and attitudes of the Roma towards the non-Roma. We discuss the results with regard to possibilities of improving the long-standing troubled relations between the Roma and non-Roma in the Czech Republic as well as internationally.
