Academic aspirations among children facing social exclusion and discrimination

Abstract:

Cílem předkládané studie je zjistit, jaké vzdělanostní aspirace mají sociálně znevýhodnění žáci na druhém stupni základní školy, a to z pohledu žáků komunitní základní školy a standardní základní školy. V teoretické části vycházím z konceptu topologické teorie, sociálně ekologického přístupu a systémového přístupu. Zaměřuji se však zejména na vztah mezi sociálním kontextem a utvářením vzdělanostních aspirací. Dále se věnuji problematice sociálně znevýhodněného žáka, problematice psychodiagnostiky sociálně znevýhodněných dětí, specifikům sociálně znevýhodněného žáka ve škole a zachycení podstatných momentů na úrovni žáka, rodiny, vrstevníků a školy. Studie je založena na kvantitativním i kvalitativním vyhodnocení dat, které jsem získala metodou polostrukturovaných rozhovorů. V rozhovorech se projevují vlastní zkušenosti žáků s utvářením vzdělanostních aspirací a jejich dosahováním. Dospěla jsem k zjištění, že všichni dotázaní respondenti chtějí pokračovat v sekundárním vzdělání, role rodičů spočívá zejména v podpoře žáků a jako významné faktory utváření aspirací se jeví zkušenost, zájem o obor, role models a vytrvalost.

Abstract:

The objective of this diploma paper is to describe academic aspirations of the social disadvantaged children. It focuses on school children at latter years of the primary school and compares views of those attending “community” primary school and those at “standard” primary school. The theoretical part is based on the concept of Topological Theory, Social-Ecological Approach and Systems Approach. I’ve focused on the relation between social context and formation of the academic aspirations. Further, I analyze the problem of social disadvantaged school child, the issues of psychodiagnostic of socialy disadvantaged school children, the specifics of social disadvantaged school child at school and to describe essential issues of line school child – family – peers - school. The study is based on qualitative and quantitative data analyses that have been gathered by the method of semi-structured interviews. They show the experience of the interviewed school children with forming of the academic aspirations and achieving them. I have identified that all interviewed respondents want to go on the education at the secondary school, the role of the parents consist in encouragement of children and significant factors of formation of the academic aspiration seem to be experience, interest in the subject, the role models and persistence.
