“Tale as Old as Time”: Modernization of Gender Roles in Disney Remakes

Anotácia:

Práce se zabývá původními kreslenými filmy studia Walt Disney Studios (Popelka, Šípková Růženka a Kráska a zvíře) a jejich hranými remaky, které vznikly v posledním desetiletí. Obě verze každého příběhu jsou v jednotlivých kapitolách srovnávány a nejvíce pozornosti je věnováno posílení pozice ženských postav v jednotlivých příbězích a změnám v archetypálních rolích mužů a žen. Tato práce rovněž sleduje a popisuje inovativní myšlenky, které jsou vkládány do remaků a které upravují vyznění původních příběhů pro moderní publikum.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the original animated films produced by the Walt Disney Studios (Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast) and their remakes that were produced in the last decade. Both versions of the same narrative are compared and contrasted in the individual chapters. The analysis focuses on changes in the female empowerment in the individual stories and changes in the roles of the classic male and female archetypes. The thesis also explores the innovative thoughts that are being inserted into the remakes and that adjust the core messages of the original narratives for the modern audience.
