From the Phenomenal to the Posthuman Body: Maria Irene Fornes’s Painterly Aesthetics in the Context of Merleau-Ponty’s Philosophy

Abstract:

V rámci teoretického podkladu vypracovaného na základě filozofie Maurice Merleau-Pontyho, tato disertační práce zkoumá tvorbu Marie Irene Fornes, přičemž se zaměřuje zejména na divadelní hry, které napsala a režírovala v 80. letech 20. století. Merleau-Ponty je obecně považován za filozofa, který zaměřil pozornost na tělo; tato práce považuje tělo jako výchozí bod pro analýzu díla Fornes a zkoumá jeho různé aspekty: tělo jako zdroj umělecké tvorby, způsob, kterým historicky vnímáme význam těla a roli těla jako vizuálního fenoménu na jevišti. Ačkoli se práce soustřeďuje na jedno desetiletí tvorby, připomíná, že šedesátá léta měla na tvorbu Fornes zásadní vliv a chápe je jako autorčino formativní období, v němž začala psát své první hry a zapojila se do činnosti divadelního hnutí off-off-Broadway v New Yorku. Tato práce poukazuje na další důležitý vliv na divadelní tvorbu Fornes, a to na její ranou malířskou tvorbu. Význam malířské povahy divadelního díla Fornes je zkoumán v kontextu Merleau-Pontyho estetické teorie. Vzhledem k tomu, že Fornes byla nejen autorkou dramatických děl, ale také režisérkou, která zdůrazňovala, že psaní a režie jsou vzájemně závislé činnosti, analyzuje tato práce kromě textů publikovaných her také divadelní představení her, které Fornes sama režírovala, a to s přihlédnutím k videonahrávkám představení a dalším druhům archivního materiálu, jako jsou režisérčiny poznámky, nepublikované hry a rané rukopisy.

Abstract:

Within a theoretical framework based on Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy, this dissertation explores Maria Irene Fornes’s work, concentrating mainly on the plays that she wrote and directed in the 1980s. While Merleau-Ponty is usually viewed to be the philosopher who directed attention to the body, the present study takes his concept of the body as the point of entry into Fornes’s work by examining its various aspects: the body as the source of Fornes’s practice of artmaking, the way in which her plays problematize the historical understanding of the body, and the role of the body as a visual figure on the stage. While it concentrates on one decade of playwriting, this dissertation stresses the fundamental importance of the 1960s on Fornes’s work, which is understood as her formative period, the time she started writing plays and became involved with the off-off-Broadway theater movement in New York City. It foregrounds another major impact on Fornes’s work, her early career in painting. The significance of the painterly aspect of Fornes’s theatricality is explored alongside Merleau-Ponty’s aesthetic theory. As Fornes worked both as a playwright and director, who stressed that writing and directing were interdependent, beyond analyzing the published texts of the plays, whenever possible, the dissertation intends to take into account the performances of those plays that were directed by Fornes herself, looking at video recordings and other types of archival material such as director’s notes, unpublished plays, and early manuscripts.
