Abstract:

Disertační práce zkoumá možnosti a meze uspořádání funkčních morfémů. Na vzorku padesáti geograficky a geneticky různých jazyků ukazuje, jaké jsou kombinatorické možnosti morfémů vyjadřujících pád, číslo a určitost uvnitř nominální fráze. Studie se přitom neomezuje pouze na jazyky s aglutinační morfologií, kde jedné gramatické kategorii odpovídá jeden morfologický exponent, ale zkoumá též jazyky fúzující několik gramatických kategorií do jednoho morfému. Shromážděná data ukazují, že mezi různými vzorci seřazení existují výrazné rozdíly v četnosti jejich výskytu. Hlavním pozorováním přitom je, že některá seřazení morfémů v nominální frázi nejsou doložená v žádném ze zkoumaných jazyků. Disertační práce se snaží tato pozorování teoreticky vysvětlit za použití nástrojů nanosyntaxe. Ukazuje, že teoretické koncepty běžně používané v nanosyntaxi (zejména spellout-driven movement, backtracking a Spec formation) jsou schopné odvodit doložená seřazení a zároveň vysvětlit, proč naopak některé vzorce v žádných jazycích nenacházíme. Závěry práce představují další z argumentů pro hypotézu, že morfologie je řízena stejnými principy jako syntax.

Abstract:

This dissertation explores the limits and possibilities of morpheme ordering in the noun phrase. Based on a sample of fifty geographically and genetically diverse languages, it presents the attested – and unattested – combinations of case, number, and definiteness morphemes. The account covers not only languages with agglutinative morphology but also languages that fuse more grammatical categories into a single morphological exponent – a portmanteau. The book shows that not all patterns of morpheme ordering that are logically possible are equally represented within the sample and, importantly, certain patterns are not attested at all. The dissertation provides an account for this observation by using the latest theoretical tools from the nanosyntactic framework, namely spellout-driven movement, backtracking, and Spec formation. The results of this study provide evidence for the hypothesis that ordering in morphology is governed by the same principles as in syntax.
