University expectations of transiting students of the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University and the level of their fulfillment

Abstract:

The presented diploma thesis discusses the topic of expectations of students transi-tioning from high school to university, which relate to their new educational and life stage. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on defining the period of transition to university, the concept of the psychological contract, as well as the specific university expectations of incoming students. The aim of the empirical part is to map the university expectations of incoming students of Psychology and Russian Studies at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University and to examine the level of their fulfillment. Based on the stated aim, research with 65 first-year university students from mentioned fields of study was conducted. The research data was collected using The In-ventory of expectations of Transiting Students, which was physically administered to the respondents during the second semester of their university studies. The results showed that students come to university with a wide range of expectations, and on average these expectations are met on 70.06 %. The most met expectation was the expectation of successful completion of all enrolled subjects (M = 89.23 %) and the least met expectation was the expectation of balanced ratio of lectures and seminars in the curriculum (M = 48.15 %). Furthemore, the data analysis did not show a statistically significant difference between male and female students in the level of fulfillment of their university expectations (U = 390, p = 0.97), nor was there a statistically significant difference in the variable between students who are and who are not currently studying their preferred field of study (U = 312.50, p = 0.33). Additionally, there was no statistically significant relationship between the level of fulfillment of university expectations and the age of students (rs = - 0.05, p = 0.69). Finally, data analysis revealed no existence of a statistically significant difference in the level of fulfillment of university expectations between students from the field of study with higher and lower students‘ retention rate (U = 379, p = 0.31).

Abstract:

Predkladaná diplomová práca pojednáva o problematike očakávaní študentov prechádzajúcich zo strednej na vysokú školu, ktoré sa týkajú ich novej vzdelávacej a životnej etapy. Teoretická časť práce je zameraná na vymedzenie obdobia tranzitu na vysokú školu, konceptu psychologickej zmluvy a konkrétnych vysokoškolských očakávaní prichádzajúcich študentov. Cieľom empirickej časti práce je zmapovať vysokoškolské očakávania prichádzajúcich študentov študijných odborov psychológia a ruské štúdiá na Filozofickej fakulte Masarykovej univerzity a preskúmať mieru ich naplnenia. Za účelom dosiahnutia vopred stanoveného cieľa bol zrealizovaný výskum, ktorého sa zúčastnilo 65 študentov prvého ročníka zo spomenutých študijných odborov. Na získanie výskumných dát bol použitý Inventár očakávaní tranzitujúcich študentov, ktorý bol respondentom fyzicky administrovaný v priebehu druhého semestra ich vysokoškolského štúdia. Výsledky výskumu preukázali, že študenti prichádzajú na vysokú školu so širokým spektrom očakávaní a že tieto očakávania majú v priemere naplnené na 70,06 %. Študentom sa najviac naplnilo očakávanie o úspešnom absolvovaní všetkých zapísaných predmetov (M = 89,23 %) a najmenej očakávanie o vyváženom pomere prednášok a seminárov v skladbe výučby (M = 48,15 %). Analýza dát zároveň nepreukázala medzi študentami mužského a ženského pohlavia štatisticky významný rozdiel v miere, do akej majú naplnené vysokoškolské očakávania (U = 390; p = 0,97), rovnako nebol v pojednávanej závislej premennej preukázaný štatisticky významný rozdiel medzi študentami, ktorí aktuálne študujú a ktorí neštudujú svoj preferovaný študijný odbor (U = 312,50; p = 0,33) a nebol za-znamenaný ani štatisticky významný vzťah medzi mierou naplnenia vysokoškolských očakávaní a vekom študentov (rs = - 0,05; p = 0,69). V neposlednom rade naše výsledky nepreukázali existenciu štatisticky významného rozdielu v miere naplnenia vysokoškolských očakávaní medzi študentami zo študijného odboru s vyššou a nižšou retenciou študentov do druhého ročníka (U = 379; p = 0,31).
