The portrayal of a female cyborg in sci-fi films

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá zobrazením postav žen-kyborgů ve sci-fi filmech. Cílem bakalářské práce je prostřednictvím myšlenek významných feministických teoretiček, jako jsou např. Donna Haraway a Laura Mulvey, a teorie kyberfeminismu, analyzovat tři vybrané filmy, v nichž vždy jednu z postav představuje žena-kyborg. Pro tuto práci jsou zvoleny filmy Metropolis (1927), Blade Runner (1982) a Ex Machina (2014). Záměrem práce je pozorovat prostřednictvím analyzovaných filmů, jak se vyvíjí v čase zobrazování postavy ženského kyborga a jakou mají tyto změny spojitost s vývojem feministického hnutí ve společnosti. Práce se zaměří především na přítomnost male gaze vůči analyzovaným postavám a na jejich sexualizaci.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the portrayal of cyborg women in sci-fi films. The aim of the thesis is to analyse three films with the character of a cyborg woman, through applying thoughts of feminist theorists such as Donna Haraway and Laura Mulvey and the theory of cyberfeminism. The films chosen for the analysis are Metropolis (1927), Blade Runner (1982) and Ex Machina (2014). The intention of the thesis is to determine whether the portrayal of said characters changes during the history of cinematography and whether the potential change is influenced by the feminist movement. The thesis focuses mainly on the presence of male gaze and sexualisation of the cyborg-women.
