Relationships of Facial and Hand Morphometry

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá vztahem mezi morfometrií obličeje a ruky. Na vzorku 136 jedinců (66 dívek a 70 chlapců) ve věku mezi 6 a 15 lety byly hodnoceny rozměry získané digitalizací význačných bodů a následným výpočtem vzdáleností mezi nimi. Analýza obličeje byla založena na archivních barevných fotografiích; analýza ruky na naskenovaných standardizovaných 2D snímcích. Za účelem eliminace vlivu věku v dalších analýzách byla vypočítána residua lineární regresní analýzy závislosti každé proměnné na věku, která pak byla použita pro hodnocení vztahu mezi proměnnými na obličeji a na ruce. Jako míra statistické závislosti mezi residui všech proměnných byl použit Spearmanův korelační koeficient. Více statisticky významných a silnějších korelací bylo zaznamenáno u chlapců nežli u dívek. U chlapců nejsilněji pozitivně korelovala hloubka obličeje (rozměr mezi body pronasale a tragion) s délkou ruky, délkami prstů a s šířkou dlaně. Čím výrazněji chlapcům prominoval nos ventrálně (tj. čím nižší byl úhel glabella_pronasale_pogonion), tím větší měli délkové rozměry ruky a prstů. U dívek se s prominující bradou (t.j.se zmenšujícím se obličejovým úhlem glabella_pogonion_gnathion) pojily menší délkové a šířkové rozměry ruky. Celkově z výsledků vyplývá, že morfologie ruky u člověka souvisí s morfologií obličeje, přičemž tyto závislosti se u obou pohlaví liší.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on relationship between facial and hand morphometry. Measurements obtained by digitalizing landmarks, followed by computation of the distances between them,were studied on the sample of 136 subjects (66 females and 70 males)between the ages of 6 and 15 years. The analysis of face was based on archive color facial photographs; the analysis of hand on images obtained by standardized method of 2D scanning. In order to eliminate age-related effects from further analyses, residuals for each variable were calculated using linear regression model and used for assessment of relationships between facial and hand measurements. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was used as a measure of statistical dependence between residuals of all variables. More traits showed strong and statistically significant positive correlation in males compared to females. In males, the highest association was observed between the face depth (distance from pronasale to tragion) and the hand length, four digit lengths and width of the hand. There was significant increase in the size of hand and digit lengths with more protruding nose in ventral direction (i.e. lower value of the angle glabella_pronasale_pogonion). In females, there was significant decrease in the length and width measurements of hand with more protruding area of mentum (i.e. lower value of the angle glabella_pronasale_pogonion). Obtained results suggest that there are significant relationships between facial and hand morphology in human, and these associations are different between males and females.
