Reproductive strategies and reproductive success in monkeys of tribe Cercopithecini

Abstract:

Tato práce se snaží shrnout dosavadní znalosti z dostupných vědeckých publikací o reprodukčních strategiích a s nimi spjatého reprodukčního úspěchu u kočkodanů. Podle sociální organizace můžeme u kočkodanů rozlišovat monogamní a polygynní druhy. Tato práce se zabývá především polygynními druhy, neboť za monogamní druh je považován pouze jeden druh kočkodana, který nebyl zatím dostatečně prozkoumán. U polygynních druhů samčí reprodukční strategie souvisí především se strukturou tlupy, kdy podle počtu samců v tlupě rozlišujeme jedno-samčí a více-samčí skupiny. Reprodukční strategie se liší především mezi rezidentními a nerezidentními samci v době říje, ale oba typy samců mohou využívat stejnou strategii spolčených párů. Mezi reprodukční strategie většiny polygynních samic řadíme kromě strategie spolčený párů také aktivní provokaci nebo zkracování meziporodního intervalu. Na reprodukční strategie a reprodukční úspěch kočkodanů má zřejmě největší vliv dominance. Ačkoliv nebyla zatím potvrzena u všech druhů, u kočkodana obecného (Chlorocebus aethiops) již bylo potvrzeno, že hierarchické postavení v tlupě má podstatný vliv na reprodukční strategie i reprodukční úspěch. Důležitými faktory jsou zřejmě také velikost skupiny a potrava. Na reprodukční úspěch pak může mít také významný vliv infanticida, která byla u několika druhů kočkodanů pozorována. Odlišují se nejen reprodukční strategie mezi jednotlivými druhy kočkodanů, např. mezi kočkodanem husarským (Erythrocebus patas) a kočkodanem angolským (Miopithecus talapoin), ale dokonce i v rámci jednoho druhu např. u kočkodana husarského (Erythrocebus patas), na což mohou mít vliv i environmentální podmínky. Pro úplný přehled a porozumění dané problematice je nutné nasbírat mnohem více dat, které by osvětlily situace u celé řady dalších zatím neprobádaných druhů kočkodanů, kterými jsou např. kočkodan sluneční (Cercopithecus solatus), kočkodan Hamlynův (Cercopithecus hamlyni), kočkodan červenonosý (Cercopithecus erythrotis), kočkodan Dianin (Cercopithecus diana), kočkodan Sclaterův (Cercopithecus sclateri), kočkodan ďamďam (Chlorocebus djamdjamensis) atd. Také je potřeba více dat i v rámci již probádaných druhů, jakými jsou např. kočkodan husarský (Erythrocebus patas), kočkodan obecný (Chlorocebus aethiops) a kočkodan angolský (Miopithecus talapoin). Ty by mohly potvrdit či vyvrátit dosavadní poznatky o těchto druzích, jelikož některá témata stále nebyla dostatečně prozkoumaná, nebo studie dospěly k odlišným výsledkům

Abstract:

This thesis aims to summarize evidence from available scientific publications about reproductive strategies and reproductive success, which is related with them, in monkeys of tribe Cercopithecini. Individual species of this tribe can be sorted as being monogamous or polygynous. This thesis deals with mainly polygynous species of tribe Cercopithecini, because only one species is considered to be monogamous species and this species still has not been explored enough. In polygynous species male reproductive strategies are related to the structure of the troop. According to the number of males in the troop we can differentiate one-male and multi-male groups. There are differences in reproductive strategies between resident and non-resident males especially in the breeding season, males of both types can use the same strategy of consortships. The reproductive strategies of most polygynous female involve consorthips, active solicitation or shortening the interbirth interval. The most significant influence on reproductive strategies and reproductive success in monkeys of tribe Cercopithecini has probably dominance. Although it has not been confirmed for all species of this tribe, the effect of dominance has been confirmed for vervet monkeys, where hierarchical position in the troop has a significant influence on reproductive strategies and reproductive success. Important factors may also be size of troop and food. Significant influence on reproductive success has also infanticide, which was observed in several species of these monkeys. There are differences not only among individual species as, e.g. between patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) and southern talapoin monkeys (Miopithecus talapoin), but even within one species, for example in patas monkeys. These differences may be caused by environmental conditions.There are also differences in reproductive strategies between males and females. For a complete summary and for understanding this issue it is necessary to collect much more data, that would shed light on the situation in many other species, which are currently understudied, e.g. sun-tailed monkey (Cercopithecus solatus), owl-faced monkey (Cercopitecus hamlyni), red-eared monkey (Cercopithecus erythrotis), Diana monkey (Cercopithecus diana), Sclater's monkey (Cercopithecus sclateri), bale monkey (Chlorocebus djamdjamensis) etc. It would be also important to collect more data within the already studied species such as patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas), vervet monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops) and southern talapoin monkey (Miopithecus talapoin). Such studies could improve our current knowledge about these species, because some of the topics still have not been explored enough, or some studies differ in conclusions.
